PROTECTION AGAINST X-RAYS. £ X-Ray equipment is dangerous for the patient and the operator unless protection measures are carefully adhered to. “ if an X-ray equipment is not used properly, it may cause lesions. For this reason, & the following instructions must be carefully read and totally understood before attempting to put the equipment to work. We will be glad to assist and cooperate in putting the equipment to work Although the equipment is built according to the strictest safety rules and has a high grade of protection against radiation, no practical design can offer total protection. Nor can any design force the operator to fake the proper precautions to prevent ihe possibilty of any careless, senseless or negligent person from being exposed to direct or indirect radiations. @as It is important that any person having to do with X-rays be properly qualified and take the necessary measures to be protected against possible lesions. It is indispensable that such people are totally familar with the regulations regarding : ingtallation and operation of equipment that generate X-rays, law N°17.857/67 and its rulings. ‘The manufacturer presumes that every operator and service personnel authorized to handle, install, calibrate or maintain this equipment is aware of the danger of excessive exposure to X-rays, is adequately trained and has the necessary know: row. Therefore, it is understood that the equipment described herein is sold with the i awareness that the manufacturer, his agents and representatives have no responsiblity whatsoever in the case of lesions or damages that may result from exposure to such radiations, a There are various protective materials and devices that itis advisable to use. These limits are certainly not easy to Gefine and must be updated from time to time according to new information as it “ becomes available. For professionals exposed to radiation, the accumulated MPD must not exceed the following limits: e * Stochastic effects Annual effective dose 20 msv (2 rems) $ (These values must be considered as the average of 5 consecutive years (100 mSv a in years), and 50 mSv must not be exceeded in one single year. * Stochastic effects ‘Annual dose for the crystalline 150 mSv (15 rems) ‘Annual dose for the other areas 500 mSv (60 rems) (ie. spinal cord, chest, lungs, skin, limbs) C * Lifetime accumulated dose 40 mSv xage (1 rem x age) Protection against radiation Since exposure to X-rays can be harmful to health, great attention must be paid to protection against exposure to the primary beam. Some X-ray effects are cumulative t End extend throughout months or years. The best safety rule for the X-ray operator js to “avoid exposure to the primary beam at all times”. Any object in the path of the primary beam produces a secondary (dispersed) radiation. The intensity of the t Secondary radiation depends of the power and intensity energy of the primary beam and the atomic number of the interposed material being radiated by the primary beam. Secondary radiation may be more intense that the radiation of the plate. Take Z all necessary protective measures to safeguard against this. : One effective protective measure is the use of lead shielding. To reduce dangerous Q exposures, use elements such as mobile lead screens, aprons, gloves impregnated ‘ with lead, etc. Leaded screens must contain a minimum of 2,0 mm. of lead or its equivalent, personal protection devices (aprons, gloves, etc.), a minimum of 0.25 ; mmm. of lead or its equivalent.
