 Calculation of MTBE

Use
You calculate the MTBE from system history (notifications) using the function Calculation of
the KPI Values for Rotables. The MTBE extractor makes the calculation, see
Extraction of MTBE. The various MTBEs (MTBR, MTBSR, MTBUR, MTBF)
are calculated on material basis.

Integration
The values found as a result of the calculation can be used as input for the Spare Parts Stock
Calculation for a material in question.

Prerequisites
You can only calculate MTBEs for a material in question if you have made the necessary
settings for notifications in customizing, see:
Extraction of MTBE.

Features
The value MTBE is calculated from the system data as follows:

identifies the generalised time interval: In case of operation time, the generalised time
interval represents an operation time interval of an individual equipment . For example, an
engine (equipment 4711) operates from 10h00 to 12h00. This leads to an operation time

interval of = 2h of this equipment. In case of landing or operation cycles, the generalised

time interval represents one cycle. In this case D t = 1.

identifies all generalised time intervals of one individual equipment of the evaluation time
interval during which the values are extracted. This evaluation time interval is an input for the
MTBE Extractor. For example, the evaluation time interval given is 12 months and the end
date is the current date. An Aircraft with the engine 4711 flies one trip of two hours per day

every day of the week. The sum now identifies the sum of all operation time intervals or
cycles of the equipment 4711 during the last 12 months. Therefore, the sum 365 days x 2
h/day = 730 operation hours or 365 landing cycles.

identifies the counting of all summed generalised time intervals belonging to one
material. For example, the material corresponding to equipment 4711 (engine) has number
ENG47. Four pieces of equipment are assigned to material ENG47: 4711, 4712, 4713, 4714.
During the last 12 months, the following operation hours were counted for these pieces of
equipment: 730h, 730h, 1500h, 1500h. Therefore, the sum over all the pieces of equipment for
this material is 4460 operation hours.

identifies the number of events of the regarded material during the evaluation time interval.
The event can be an unscheduled removal, a scheduled removal and / or a failure. The
number of events is calculated counting notifications which are created when the event occurs
(see below). For example, 10 unscheduled removals and 5 scheduled removals were counted
for material ENG47 during the last 12 months. In case of the operation time, MTBUR =
4660h / 10 = 466h, and MTBSR = 4660 / 5 = 932h.

In principle, 9 different kinds of MTBE can be calculated as described above: MTBSR,

MTBUR, MTBF for every definition of generalised time (operation time, landing cycles, and
operation cycles).

Determination of MTBR
MTBR
can be estimated from MTBUR and MTBSR:

Different portions of MTBR (i.e. MTBSR and MTBUR) can be added reciprocally, because the
reciprocal value of MTBR denotes the frequency of the event. Therefore, the definition of
generalised time has to be uniform (i.e. the operation time MTBUR can only be calculated with
operation time MTBR and operation time MTBSR).

Activities
1. On the Spare Parts Stock Calculation screen, choose MTBE Extr.
2. On the Calculation of the KPI Values for Rotables (MTBR, MTBUR, MTBSR, MTBF)
screen, enter a material or a range of materials, an evaluation period, and decide on
how to handle the results.
The results of the calculation are represented in a report. Each indicator – MTBR,
MTBUR, MTBSR and MTBF – is displayed for operation hours, landing cycles, and
operation cycles.
