WHAT IS PENANCE?
MINISTER
 Penance is the sacrament which brings to the Christian
bishop or priest. (wearing purple stole)
 God’s merciful forgiveness for any sins committed after baptism, and to
bring the sinner consolation and peace. ELEMENTS
 The word penance derives from old French and Latin “poenitentia”, both  Contrition
of which derive from the same root meaning repentance, the desire to be  Confession
forgiven  Satisfaction
BRIEF HISTORY  Absolution

In the early Church, confession and penance were very public affairs. If a
person committed a grave sin, they would ask the bishop for penance and
would publicly live as a penitent meaning they did not receive communion and
spent much time in prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Sometimes this penance
would last for years until the person would be forgiven and allowed to return to
normal Christian life. At this time, penance could only be done once in a
lifetime.
PENANCE IS ALSO CALLED:
THE FRUITS OF PENANCE
 Penance remits all sins, and gives us the sanctifying grace after a good
confession, we feel the joy of being pure from all sins, and in communion
with God.
 We are reconciling with the church. Every mortal sin even the most
secret one, separates us from the church. The priest represent the
church which we reconcile to.
