UPIKE student art featured at Weber Art
By: Laura Damron | March 25, 2019
‘The Weber Art Gallery at the University of Pikeville is currently featuring the works of graduating senior Mari Ralston. The
senior art exhibit meets part of the exit requirements for a graduating art major and reflects the student's development and
Interests over their time at UPIKE.
Ralston’s show, "Forms of Artin Everyday Life” features sculpture, handmade books, paintings, drawings and design. A
native of Brazil, Ralston is inspired by Brazilian art and common moments in life. She especially enjoys painting and
sculpting
“| think my strength in my artwork is to observe everyday life and be inspired by simple moments in my life” said Ralston,
“Sometimes | choose a memory from the past or present to depict the moment on canvas. Many of my works are about
the people in my country or my family”
“Like most artists, Mari has traveled a unique path in finding her voice in the visual arts’ said Patricia Kowolak, Division of
Humanities chair and professor of art. “Born in Brazil, he came to this country not knowing much English. That experience
focused Mari as she sharpened her visual skills and explored what she had to say. The result is artwork that speaks
‘eloquently about her family, her home and her world.”The art show will run through May 4, Ralston will discuss her artwork during a reception on Saturday, April 27 at 5 p.m. The
community is cordially invited to the art show and reception.
