For case of presentation, this date has been determined from the theoretical Limits imposed by the geometry of the aircraft, and where noted, provides for a normal allowance for tire slippage. As such, it reflects the turning capability of the aircraft in favorable operating circumstances. This data should only be used 35 guidelines for the method of determination of such parameters and for the maneu~ vering characteristics of this aircraft type. In the ground operating mode, varying airline practices may demand that more conservative turning procedures be adopted to avoid exces~ sive tire wear and reduce possible maintenance problems. Airline operating techniques will vary in the Level of performance, over a wide range of operating circumstances throughout the world. variations from standard aircraft operating patterns may be necessary to satisfy physical constraints within the maneuvering area, such as adverse grades, limited area or high risk of jet blast damage. for these reasons, ground maneuvering requirements should be coordinated with the using airlines prior to layout planning. ALL pavement requirement charts give data for a constant main gear standardized tire pressure (TRA*) which will produce a tire deflection of 32 percent with the airplane loaded to the maximum ramp weight and the CG at its maximum permissible aft position. Sub-section 7.2 gives basic data on the Landing gear footprint confi- guration, tire sizes and tables for aircraft identification. Maximum ramp weights and corresponding tire pressures are also indica~ ted. Subsection 7.3 gives maximum vertical and horizontal pavement Loads for certain critical conditions. Sub-section 7.4 provides charts which show the static Loads supported by the main Landing gear struts for the operational Limits of the airplane. These main landing gear loads are used for the interpretation of the attached pavement design charts from which load values are extrapolated when necessary. Sub-section 7.5 presents pavement requirement charts for flexible Pavements based upon format and procedures set forth in SEFL report No. 165A being “Evaluation of C-5A (CX-HLS) Aircraft Ground Flotation Characteristics for Operation from Flexible Pavements" dated February 1965, prepared by Systems and Engineering Group Research and Techno- logy Division, Air Force Systems Command, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, U.S.A. Sub-section 7.6 consists of LCN conversion curves for flexible pave~ ments. The LCN chart also gives Load plots for airplane A310 showing equivalent single wheel load versus pavement thickness "h" for flexi= ble pavements. ‘+ TRA : Tire and Rim Association Chapter 7.1.0 Page 1 Jun 92 Printed in France ainsus Goustae A3IO AIRPLANE CHARACTERISTICS Sub-section 7.7 provides rigid pavement design curves prepared with the use of the Westergaard Equations in general accordance with the procedures outlined in the 1955 edition of “Design of Concrete Airport Pavement", published by the Portland Cement Association, Illinois, U.S.A, but modified into the new computer program format described in the 1968 Portland Cement Association publication; “Computer Program for Airport Pavement Design”. (Program PDILB) by Robert G. Packard. The following procedure is used to develop the rigid pavenent design curves : 1. Having established the scale for pavement thickness to the left and the scale for allowable working stress to the right, an arbitrary load Line is drawn representing the main landing gear maximum weight to be shown. ALL values of the subgrade modules (k values) are then plotted using the maxinum load Lines. Additional Load Lines for the incremental value of weight on the main landing gear are then established on the basis of the curve for k = 300 psi, already established, Sub-sect ion 7.8 represents LCN conversion curves for rigid pavements having been plotted using procedures and curves in Internat ional Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) document 157 - AN/901 - 1977, Aerodrome Manual, Part 3, Para. 1.5. The LCN charts also illustrate Load plots for airplane A310 showing equivalent single wheel load versus radius of relative stiffness factor for rigid pavements. Chapter 7.1.0 Page 2 May 85 Printed in France @ A310 AIRPLANE CHARACTERISTICS FOR AIRPORT PLANNING Sub-section 7.9 represents the ACN/PCN system as referenced in Amendment 35 to ICAO Annex 14, "Aerodromes", 7th Edition, June 1976, Provides a standardized international airplane/pavement rating system replacing the various S, TT, LCN, AU, ISWL, etc., rating systems used throughout the world. ACN is the Aircraft Classification Number and: - PCN is the Pavement Classification Number. An aircraft having an ACN equal to or Less than the PCN can operate on the pavement subject to any Limitation on the tire pressure. Numerically, the ACN is two times the derived single wheel load expressed in thousands of kilograms, where the derived single wheel load is defined as the load on a single tire inflated to 1.25 MPa (181 psi) that would have the same pavement requirements as the aircraft. Computationally, the ACN/PCN system used the PCA program PD ILB for rigid pavements and S-77-1 for flexible pavements to calculate ACN values. The method of pavement evaluation is left up to the airport with the results of their evaluation presented as follows : PAVEMENT SUBGRADE —-TIRE-PRESSURE EVALUTATION PN TYPE CATEGORY CATEGORY METHOD R ~ Rigid A= High W- No Limit | T - Technical F- Flexible B- Medium = X~- To 1.5 MPa U - Using aircraft © Low 17 psid D = Ultra Low Y - To 1.0 MPa (145 psi 2 > To 0.5 MPa (73 psi) Chapter 7.9.1 charts show the aircraft ACN values for flexible pavements. The four subgrade categories are : High Strength - CBR 15 Medium Strength - CBR 10 Low Strength ~ CBR 6 Ultra Low Strength = CBR 3 voo> too Chapter 7.9.2 charts show the aircraft ACN values for rigid pavements. (ACN and LCN curves are not anymore related to one aircraft version with a fixed tire pressure). Consequently, introduction of table hereafter (Page 3) was necessary to permit the determination of the right tire pressure to be used for ACN or LCN graphic determination. Table (page 3) covers the different A320 versions (max T.0.W., type of Landing gears, type of tires). It is up to the user to select tire pressure corresponding to the aircraft version considered before using one of the curves given in chapters 7-6, 7-8 or 7-9. NOTE : For LCN calculation, pressure given in column 5 shall be used. For ACN calculation, use pressure given in column 6. Tables (pages 3 and 4) has been draxn-up according to the model generally used by official organisms such a ICAO, AERAD.. in their publications. Columns have been numbered for a better identification. COLUMN 1 : gives the aircraft version (basic T.0.W.) of all aircraft certified in the type. COLUMN 2 : for each aircraft version, maximum ramp weight and operating weight empty are given. These tuo weights will allow the user to draw-up Linear ACN curves for CAT A to CAT D (flex or rigid) since corresponding ACN are given in columns 9 and 10. COLUMN 3 : gives the Landing geometry in INCHES. COLUMN 4 : gives the different types of tire which are fitted on each version. COLUMN 5 and 6 : give the tire pressure of tires fitted on aircraft. Tire pressure “wheel unloaded” is to be used for LCN calculations. Tire pressure “wheel loaded" is to be used for ACN calculations. COLUMN 7 = percentage of Load on main gears at max. aft C.G. This percentage allow the greatest Load on Landing gears which can be encountered to be calculated. This percentage is generally used when max. aircraft T.0.W. is considered. In practice, for aircraft weights Lower than max T.0.W., @ percentage of Load on main gears corresponding to a medium C.G. Chapter 7.2.1 Page 1 Jun 92 Printed in France G A310 AIRPLANE CHARACTERISTICS FOR AIRPORT PLANNING position can be used. In that case, refer to chapter 7.4 for the calculation of the percentage. Generally, a value of 90 or 92 % is used. COLUMN 8 : Load on main gears at max aft C.G. Figure given is to be divided by two (to get the Load on one gear) before entering ACN or LEN curves. COLUMN 9 and 10 : ACN These columns give the ACN for CAT A to D, for rigid or flexible Pavements. Values given allow a graph to be drawn up (Linear), to calculate ACN for weights within max ramp weight and OWE (for max aft C.G.). For C.G. other than max. aft, use curves given in chapter 7.9. COLUMN 11 and 12 : LEN LEN are given for 20 INCHES flex and 30 INCHES rigid. For other thicknesses or radii of relative stiffness, use the curves given in chapters 7-6 and 7-8. BOGGIE GEAR 0.978 x 1.524 Printed in France ainaus @inoustae A 310 AIRPLANE CHARACTERISTICS n7 Rigid Pavement Requirements ~ Portland Cenent Association Design Method Rigid pavement requirements, presented herein, are based upon two Portland Cement Association practices = ~ The former, standard manual method of counting unit moment blocks of the Pickett and Ray influence charts (Reference : Portland Cement Asso~ ciation publication “The Design of Concrete Airport Pavement, 1955". = The new computerized version of the above as described in "Computer Program for Airport Pavement Design" by Robert G. Packard, Portland Cement Association, 1967, and "Operating Instructions for Computer Program BOIL". 1968. Higher stresses for equivalent pavement thicknesses are obtained by the computerized method. These occur because of the following : = INCREASED RADIUS OF INFLUENCE The effect of influence from adjacent wheels by the manual method was Limited to approximately 2 (the radius of relative stiffness). The computer utilizes the Westergaard equation directly and includes influ- ence from all wheels within a radius of 3. ~ MAXIMIZING PROCESS It has been a common practice when using the manual count method to align the landing gear footprint on the major axis of the influence chart with one wheel centered over the origin. While this practice does not necessarily produce the maximum possible moment, the values obtained have been considered practical because the procedure eliminates arduous repetitive manual summations of moment blocks. The computer determines the actual maximum stress values by a combina~ tion of shifting the footprint in relationship to the origin and by angular rotation of the footprint. = DIFFERENCE IN FOOTPRINT SHAPE An elliptical contact area is used in the computerized version to represent a single-wheel footprint instead of a rectangle with rounded ends. The variance in moment attributed to this change is minor. Actual pavement stress for any given model or airplane has not increased. The state of the art in calculation of pavement stress has advanced to permit prediction of stress values to a higher degree of certainty. This permits a proportionate decrease in design stress safety factor. chapter 7.7.0 Page 1 bec 79 Printed in France ainsus @woustrie ASO AIRPLANE CHARACTERISTICS ar usine None. The envelope curves given in the present chapter have been determined according to the ACN/PCN described in Amendment 35 to ICAO Annex ‘14N‘"Aerodromes”. (Refer to chapter 7.1 of the present Airport planning Manual). The present chapter provides the following curves : ~ FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS 7.9.1.1 A310 - ACN FLEX CAT A and CAT B 7.9.4.2 R310 - ACN FLEX CAT ¢ and CAT D = RIGID PAVEMENTS 7.9.4.2 KB10 - ACN RIGID CAT A and CAT B 7.9.2.2 KB10 - ACN RIGID CAT C and CAT D Aircraft parameters used to determine the ACN (Aircraft Classification Number) are = the Load on one main gear = the tire pressure (wheel Loaded) It is up to the user to select from table Page 3 chapter 7.2.3, column 6, the tire pressure corresponding to the aircraft version considered. Tables Pages 3 and 4 chapter 7.2.1 (columns 9 and 10) also provides ACNs for flexible (colum 9) and rigid (column 10) pavements, for subgrades CAT A to CAT D, at max ramp weight and operating weight empty (OWE), for max aft C.G. position. Determination of ACN for intermediate aircraft weights will be made by using the relevant curve according to the examples given hereafter. NOTE : For the determination of the Load on one main gear (function of the aircraft weight and C.G. position), refer to chapters 7.2.1 and 7.4 of the present manual. Chapter 7.9 Page 1 Jun 92 Ponte in France A310 AIRPLANE CHARACTERISTICS FOR AIRPORT PLANNING EXAMPLE 1 : DETERMINATION OF AIRCRAFT CLASSIFICATION NUMBER (ACN) FOR A GIVEN AIRCRAFT WEIGHT AND A GIVEN PAVEMENT PAVEMENT DATA : PCN 48/F/8/..., (means flexible pavement having PCN 48 and subgrade strength CAT B - i.e. medium strength CBR 10). AIRCRAFT DATA : A310-300 (basic design T.O.W. 150 t) fitted with tires 46x17 R20, operation envisaged at a T.0.W. of 143 te €.G. position : 25 X of AMC. A. Determination of ‘the Load on main gears Use the curve or the formula given in chapter 7.4.0 page 3. Result is 127900 kg. B. Determination of the tire pressure (wheel Loaded) The tire pressure to be used is 14.3 bars (given in table Page 4 of chapter 7.2.1 colum 6 for A310-300 at design T.0.W. 150 t). C. Determination of ACN by using the envelope curve Curve 7.9.1.1, (flexible ACN, CAT A and CAT B) is used. Enter the Load on main gears (128000 kg) and tire pressure wheel unloaded (14.3 bars) in the LH graph. The distance of the point determined to the horizontal reference Line is to be plotted on the CAT B curve of the RH graph. The distance of this new point to the vertical reference Line is to be plotted on the ACN scale. The ACN found is 43 (rounded value). The aircraft at the weight (143 t) can use the pavement without eny restriction, since ACN (43) is Lower than PCN (48). 3 gemaeumsun i ES EeSar the i 107907 30 279910 507390 aay 4 ebew mule mH ener i Peep few mt ene i i} aoe i | EE mscis i ' ~ wee ep ee ek eer er ee) woe rr) ' . In such a case, one can be Led to calculate the aircraft weight which gives - for the pavement and subgrade CATEGORY considered, an ACN equal to the PCN (Pavement Classification Number). PAVEMENT DATA : PCN 45/R/D/..., (means Rigid Pavement having PCN 45 and subgrade reactio modulus CAT D - i.e. ultra Low, K = 75 pci). AIRCRAFT DATA : A310-200 (design T.O.W. 142 £) fitted with tires 46 x 16 - 20. Load on main Landing gears is considered at 92 % of the aircraft weight (corresponding to a C.G. value approximatively equal to 31.5 % of ANC). A. Determination of the tire pressure (wheel Loaded) Refer to table Page 3 chapter 7.2.1, column 6. For this aircraft version and tires, the tire pressure to be used is 13.3 bars. B. Determination of Load on main gears Use curve 7.9.2.2 (RIGID ACN, CAT C and CAT 0). At ACN 45 of the ACN scale (RH graph), trace a parallel to the vertical reference Line. That determines a point on CAT D curve. The distance of this point to the horizontal reference Line is to be plotted on the 43.3 bars Line of the LH graph.
