BODY IMAGE, SELF-LOVE AND LADY GAGA

Mirror, mirror on the wall… Who’s to say you’re fat at all?
By Michaela Martin, 2017

1 It was Sunday, February 5th and people were sitting around a flat screen TV watching the
Super Bowl. This is a huge event not only in America, but also around the world. The Patriots
and The Falcons were playing and, suddenly, it was the moment everyone had been waiting
for... the half-time show.
5 Lady Gaga made her grand appearance in a crop top and booty shorts. The singer
performed an incredible 12-minute set for her half-time show at the Super Bowl, complete with
demanding dance routines, piano-playing and costume changes. But unfortunately, one aspect
of the show got people talking more than everything else: her figure. She hadn’t even finished
her set when comments started flooding social media. Americans are used to seeing photo
10 shopped pictures, so Lady Gaga’s real body took them by surprise. Like most women across the
nation, her tummy is not a set of toned out abs but, instead, a normal belly with its imperfections.
The modelling industry has brainwashed many of us into thinking that being “perfect” means
being a size 8, composed of nothing but skin and bones. It’s funny how society works because
when you can’t meet this impossible standard you feel ashamed, but when you get close to this,
15 you also feel ashamed. There is no winning when it comes to body image.
Instead of being so focused on Lady Gaga’s “belly rolls” why can’t we focus on the
awesome performance that she gave? Why do we think that it is ever okay to point out the
imperfections of others? Lady Gaga didn’t like what happened, so she for spoke out against this.
She posted an Instagram picture, “I heard my body is a topic of conversation, so I wanted to say,
20 I’m proud of my body and you should be proud of yours too. No matter who you are or what you
do, be yourself, and be relentless. Thank you to everyone who supports me. I love you guys.
Xoxo, Gaga.”
Lady Gaga is known for her unconventionality and provocative
work, as well as her cheeky attitude. Lady Gaga doesn’t like people
25 talking about the way she looks because she was bullied when she
was younger. She said “I had a very big nose, very curly brown hair
and I was overweight. I got made fun of.” So, she often gives
empowering speeches during shows to her fans about the importance
of self-confidence and ‘being whoever you want to be’.
