Reading Engagement Activities

1. Pair students up to give summary of what they just read to each other.
2. Stand Up Sit Down or thumbs up thumbs down, you can ask questions about the story
and ask the students to stand up if they agree, or disagree. This is good to keep students
engaged during a read aloud.
3. Response Cards Have the students create response cards yes/no, emotions happy sad,
mad, scared, true false. When reading a story you can ask questions and have the
students use their response cards. For example do you think this character is going to
continue on their journey yes or no?.
4. You can have students draw pictures of the story they are reading.
5. If your doing a group lesson and all the students are reading the same story you can
have a worksheet to go along with the story for them to fill out.

Re-Engagement
1. Make reading fun, read books that are of interest to the students
2. Have students read aloud
3. Relate back to the books and characters. Choose books that students can relate to. The
more you can relate stuff to their life outside of school the more engaged they will be.
4. Create opportunities to have discussions, book clubs
5. Read for fun with no ties to assignments, grades. Just to get the student reading again.
Its important to teach students to read for fun.
