Disconnect the ventiation hose from the positive crankcase ventiation (PCV) valve. Remove the PCV valve from the rocker cover and reconnect it to the ventilation hose. 2, Run the engine at idle and put a finger on the open fend of the PCV valve and make sure that the intake ‘manifold vacuum can be fet. The plunger inside the PCV valve will move back and 3. Ifthe vacuum is not felt, clean the PCV valve and ven- tiltion hose in cleaning solvent or replace if neces- sary. INSPECTION corors 1. Remove the PCV valve. 2. Inserta thin stickinto the PCV valve from the threaded ‘side to check that the plunger moves. 3. If the plunger does not move, the PCV valve is ‘clogged. Clean itor replace. INSTALLATION ceiococs Install the PCV valve and tighten to specified torque. PCV valve tightening torque : ‘8 ~ 12 Nm (80 ~ 120 kgem, 5.8 ~ 87 Ibtt) EC -10 EMISSIONS CONTROL SYSTEM = ___mnNISSIONS CONTROL SYSTEM EVAPORATIVE EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM EVAPORATIVE (EVAP) CANISTER PURGE SOLENOID VALVE COMPONENTS ccxzoe: AIR FLTER, FUEL CUT VALVE “THERMAL EXPANSION VOLUME FUEL FILLER CAP (VACUUM RELIEF) OVERFILL UMITER (LEVELING PIPE) FUEL FILLER PIPE <— FUEL vapor ~<--— PURGE AIR EVAPORATIVE EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM PURGE CONTROL SYSTEM ccmee ECM MANIFOLD ABSOLUTE PRESSURE & ‘AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR, ‘SURGE TANK FUEL TANK IDLE SPEED ‘CONTROL ACTUATOR [AIR CLEANER, PURGE CONTROL, ‘SOLENOID VALVE AR Eune. PURGE CONTROL SOLENOID VALVE INSPECTION NOTE When disconnecting the vacuum hose, make an iden- tification mark on itso that itcan be reconnected to its oniginal position. 1. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the solenoid valve. 2. Detach the harness connector, 3. Connect a vacuum pump to the nipple to which the red-striped vacuum hose was connected, 4. Apply vacuum and check when voltage is applied to the evaporative emission canister purge solenoid valve and when the voltage is discontinued, Battery vollage Normal condition ‘When applied ‘Vacuum is released When discontinued | Vacuum is maintained ‘5. Measure the resistance between the terminals of the solenoid valve. Evaporative emission canister purge solenoid valve Coll resistance : 260 [at 20°C (68°F) EC -13 EVAPORATIVE EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM EVAPORATIVE (EVAP) CANISTER INSPECTION | tacrrne 1. Look for loose connections, sharp bends or damage to the fuel vapor lines. 2. Look for distortion, cracks or fuel leakage. 3. After removing the EVAP canister, inspect for cracks ‘or damage. EC -14 EMISSIONS CONTROL SYSTEM ———. $$ EMISSIONS CONTROL SYSTEM FUEL FILLER CAP OPERATION erorcus ‘The fuel filer cap is equipped with a vacuum relief valve to prevent the escape of fuel vapor into the atmosphere. Barometric pressure ‘When fuel tank is under pressure. When fuel tank is under vacuum. EXHAUST EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM EXHAUST EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM OPERATION. cewseer Exhaust emissions (CO,HC,NOx) are controled by a com- bination of engine modifications and the addition of special control components. ‘Modifications to the combustion chamber, intake manifold, ‘camshaft and ignition system form the basic control sys- tom, ‘These items have been integrated into a highly effective ‘system which controls exhaust emissions while maintain- ing good driveability and fuel economy. AIR/FUEL MIXTURE CONTROL SYSTEM. [MULTIPORT FUEL INJECTION (MFI) SYSTEM) ‘The MFI system is a system which uses the signals from the heated oxygen sensor to activate and control the in- jector installed in the manifold for each cylinder, thus pre- cisely regulating the air/fuel mixture ratio and reducing ‘omissions. This in tur allows the engine to produce exhaust gases ‘of the proper composition to permit the use of a three way ‘catalyst. The three way catalyst is designed to corwert the ‘three pollutants (1) hydrocarbons (HC), (2) carbon monox- ide (CO), and (8) oxides of nitrogen (NOx) into harmless ‘substances. There are two operating modes in the MFI system. 4. Open Loop airtue ratio is controlled by information programmed into the ECM. 2. Closed Loop ait/tuel ratio is adjusted by the ECM ’based on information supplied by the oxygen sensor. EC-15 EMISSIONS CONTROL SYSTEM Fuel Pressure Regulator Fuel Tank Damper
