Raise the front of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands in a proper location 3. Remove the wheel nuts and front wheel DRIVESHAFT Ds -7 4, Remove the split pin, the castle nut and the washer from the front hub. 5. Drain the transmission fluid before the driveshaft is removed. 6. Using a plastic hammer, make the driveshaft discon- nected from the axle hub. 7. Push the axle hub outward and separate the drive- shaft from the axle hub. 8. Insert a pry bar between the transaxle case and the TJ. case, and pry the driveshaft from the transaxle case. A caution * Be sure to apply the pry ber to the rb of the transaxle case. + Do not insert the pry bar too deeply, as this may cause damage to the oll seal. [max. epth : 7 mm (0.28 n.)) + For automatic transaxle equipped vehicles, Insert a pry bar into the groove of the drive- shaft to remove the driveshaft from the transaxle. + Do not pull on the driveshaft; the joints may come apart. Be sure to use the pry bar. 9. Pullout the driveshalt from the transaxle case. Q cauTion * Place a plug in the hole of the transaxle case to prevent contamination ‘+ Support the driveshaft properly. ‘+ Replace the circlip each time the driveshatt is removed from the transaxle case. INSPECTION wsouc 1. Check the boots on the driveshatt for cracks, damage, leaking grease and loose boot bands. If any damage is found, replace the boot and boot bands. 2. Check the joints for wear and operating condition. 3. Turn the driveshaft by hand and make sure the splines ‘and the joints are not excessively loose. If damage is found, replace the joint. Dynamic damper Drivechat Taboor Sete 4. Check the splines for wear and damage. 5. Make sure the driveshaft is not twisted or cracked. Replace it f necessary. Ds -8 DRIVESHAFT AND AXLE INSTALLATION | eossac 1. Coat goar oil on the driveshaft splines and transaxle ccase-sliding surface. Drivechat aboot 2. Before installing the driveshaft, set the opening side ofthe circlip facing downward. ‘3. Assemble the dust cover, the hub, the brake disc and the whee! bearing to the knuckle. 4, Install the B.l.into the knuckle, 5. _Inprattice, the knuckle should be installed in the lower ‘arm the moment the B.J. is installed inthe knuckle, Be ‘careful not to damage the boot. 6. Install the knuckle in the strut assembly with the tightening torque, 75-80 Nm (750-800 kg-cm, 54~65 If. 7 Install the lower arm in the knuckle withthe tightening ‘torque 60-72 Nm (600-720 kg-cm, 43-52 Ib). 8. After the installation, check on the driveshaft for manuever by hand. 9. After instaling the washer with convex surface out- ‘ward, instal the castle nut and the split pi 10. Install the wheel and tire. DRIVESHAFT FRONT DRIVESHAFT (T.J.-B.J. TYPE) COMPONENTS cancie ps-9 TORQUE : Nm (kgf-cm, Ib-ft) A DISASSEMBLY | coosoe Gore * Do not disassemble the B.J. assembly. * The driveshatt joint uses special grease. Do not substitute with another type of grease. (refer to LUBRICANTS, DS-p.3) ‘+ The boot band should be replaced with a new ‘one. 4. Loosen the T.J. boot bands and pull the TJ. boot from the TJ. case. Be careful not to damage the boot. Ds -10 2. Seperate the TJ. boot from the TJ. case. 3. Rlemove the snap ring and spider assembly from the riveshatt. 4, Clean the spider assombiy. 8, Remove the Ba. boot bands and pullout the B.J. boot. {the boot isto be reused, wrap tape around the drive- shaft splines fo protect the boot. DRIVESHAFT AND AXLE Remove the dust cover from the B.J. assembly using the special tool(09495-33000) or a proper one. INSPECTION cxsccsn 1 2 3. ‘Check the driveshaft spline part for wear or damage. ‘Check for entry of water or foreign materials into B.J. ‘Check the spider assembly for roller rotation, wear or corrosion. ‘Check the groove inside T.. case for wear or corro- sion, ‘Check the dynamic damper for damage or cracking. DRIVESHAFT REASSEMBLY rept, case Sap tng « & oe 2 GE BJ. assambly @ynore Clean the disassembled parts with solvent, and dry them thoroughly with compressed air. Do not wash the rubber parts with solvent. Wrap the spline (T.J. side) with vinyl tape to prevent ‘damage to the dynamic damper and boots. Insort the driveshaft in the dynamic damper and boots. Install the TJ. boot tothe driveshaft, then remove the vinyl type. Be careful not to damage the boot. Install the spider assembly. Fit tho snap ring into the driveshaft groove. Ahways rotate the snap ring in its groove to make sure itis fully seated. Pack the T. withthe grease (refer to LUBRICANTS, DS-p3) Fitthe TJ. onto the driveshaft, and hold the driveshaft #0 the TJ. points upto prevent it rom fling of. ‘Add the specified grease to the Bu. as much as ‘wiped away at the time of inspection. (refer to LU- BRICANTS, DS-p.3) Install the B.J. boot. Ds -11 10. Tighten the BJ. boot bands. Girtp Dust over 8. band ‘BL assombly 11.
