ADJECTIVES

§  Adjec&ves in English usually go in front of the word they


describe:
We saw some beau&ful pain&ngs and elegant
furniture.
§  Adjec&ves can also follow some verbs : be,
get ,become , look, seem ,appear,sound,taste,smell and
feel.
The flowers smelt wonderful and the gardens looked
wonderful.
They felt exahusted by the end of the day.
§  There are many nouns in English used as adjec&ves.
a diamond ring, a library book , a seaside hotel.
ADJECTIVES
§  When we use more than one adjec&ve ,we usually put them
in a certain order. We usually begin with adjec&ves which
give an opinion or general impression:
a strange old wooden chair
a dangerous old car

§  Size+Age+Shape+Colour+Origin+Material+Purpose+N
A huge old red car
A small oval French mirror
An an&que silver soup spoon


ADVERBS
•  Adverbs are used to modify :
Verbs: They played badly last Saturday.
Adjec&ves: It was an extremely bad match.
Adverbs : They played extremely badly.
Quan&&es:There are quite a lot of people here.
•  Type of adverbs :
Manner(quickly,kindly)
Degree (very,rather)
Frequency (oSen, hardly ever,seldom)
Time ( now, today )
Place (here, there)
ADVERBS
•  Order of adverbs:
How,where and when something happens come in “end-
posi&on”: manner+place+&me.
The mee&ng took place suddenly in the office yesterday.
How oSen? –frequency adverbs have “mid-posi&on”. He
seldom goes to the cinema.
When something happens has “front- posi&on” for emphasis.
Yesterday,he painted the kitchen.
How? Can be found in three posi&ons:
Carefully,he packed his suitcase.
He carefully packed his suitcase.
He packed his suitcase carefully.
