1: Would, the magic word

We sometimes use the word “could” instead of “would” – but we should always use the “magic
word”.

What would you say in these situations?

1. You want this document faxed to all members of the kick-off meeting.
WOULD YOU FAX THIS DOCUMET TO ALL MEMBERS OF THE KICK-OFF MEETING?

Using “I’m afraid”

In spoken English we use I’m afraid when we want to signal that some bad or negative news is coming.
In the same situation in written English we use unfortunately. We can also use this form to politely say
“no” to people; in this case it is considered polite to give a reason why.

I’m afraid we have had to cancel the WG meeting scheduled for next Tuesday.
Will you be able to come to our reception? Thank you. I’d love to, but I’m afraid I have a prior
engagement.

Now answer these questions using I’m afraid.

1 Can I see Mr Jones please?

I am afraid you cant, Mr. Jones is on meeting.
