Attribute Lesson Plan

Kindergarten

Utah Core Math Standard: Geometry- Standard K.G.4

Analyze, compare, and sort two- and three-dimensional shapes and objects, in different
sizes and orientations, using informal language to describe their similarities, differences, and other
attributes (for example, color, size, shape, number of sides).

Introduction: Each student will be given 5 print out shapes. They may color and explore what
each shape looks and feels like. This lesson is designed to recognize attributes according to
shape and size.

Direct Instruction:
- Tell each student to describe to their table partner what each shape looks like.
- After talking with their partner, choose an attribute for the class to look at.
- Discuss the body, color, shape, and what they like best about the design.
- Designate a place in the room to show the chosen attribute to all students.
- Ask the students to identify similar and differences.
- Make a list on the board to help students visually see what shape is chosen.

Independent Practice:
- Once the students feel ready to explore their own shapes, they all can go work with
a table partner.
- With their partner, the students need to make some type of design with their
shapes.
- Learning and exploring what each shape is how it represents their design.
- Each student will discuss what their design/face looks like and how they chose each
shape for their picture.

Guided Instruction:
- Instruct students to complete their partner design.
- Explain how each shape is different in their own way.
Example:
- Circles have no sides and are closed.
- Squares have 4 sides
- Half circles are ½ of 1 circle

Assess Student Understanding:

- The following week the students will be asked to explore a pile of shapes.
- Students will be asked to share their shapes with the class and identity what it is.
- Describing the shape and showing what attributes it shape is key!

The 5 shapes given to the students are below:
