FRAY BOTOD
Fray Botod is a writing about a noxious, brutal personality, a liar, a cheater, and a glutton
priest. Also known as “Friar Big Belly”. It was written by the Ilonggo journalist, orator and
propagandist Graciano Lopez Jaena. In this story it tells that how friars are brutal to the
Filipinos, Women and Children. Unequal treatment and discrimination were given to the
Filipinos. Women were raped everywhere and tortured and suffered until their last breath. Very
young female children who was forcefully owned and deceived by the friars. It tells that how our
ancestors were being tortured by the friars. All I can say is that I fell pity and sad and for me they
are all our heroes.

B. BRAVE YOUNG WOMEN OF MALOLOS

During the time of Spaniards, women were not allowed to have an education. Their duty
was to simply serve the men and take care of the house. So, what the women in malolos do, they
establish a school. After I read about what they do, it made me feel proud to be a Filipina. We
are not anymore held back as merely servants but instead we reach our full potential. We must
not take granted of this right because our ancestors worked hard to achieved it. We must not
complain of the marks we received from school, but instead we must be thankful of all the
opportunities that is given to us. We must not waste this opportunity and prove our worth to our
ancestors and to the world.

C. ANG PAG-IBIG SA TINUBUANG BAYAN

In March 1896, the first issue of Kalayaan, the newspaper of the Katipunan was
published. Among the contents was the poem “Pag-ibig sa Tinubuang Lupa”. The poem
exhorted Filipinos to join the crusade to achieve real Philippines. It is written by Andres
Bonifacio. As I read the poem he made I was amazed of the fact that a man had a great love for
his country. We are ready to fight just to defend our beloved country as much as Bonifacio loved
the Philippines, he fought it against the Spaniards. Maybe nowadays many Filipinos will stand
up for their country just to fight for the Philippines. Just like the China’s unfair claim to the
Spratllys Island. They insisted on claiming it even though the Island was far from their territory.
D. The PHILIPPINES A CENTURY HENCE
“Filipinas dentro de cien anos” also known as the Philippines a century hence. It was
written in the magazine of La Solodaridad by Jose Rizal. This poem is Rizal’s tracing the
circumstances that brought about the awakening of the Filipino and consequently the birth of the
Filipino Spirit of a nation. The article is a sensible request of an affectionate son who sincerely
wishes to avoid a bloody separation between Spain and the Philippines. This is the article that
says it predicted the future of the Philippines in his years. I was caught up by what he wrote that
“in order to read the destiny of a person, it is necessary to open the book of it’s past”. Rizal
in his own words painted the picture of our past clearly. The article was tactful, as expected. It
opened to me the thought of Rizal, he is not a prophet and seer but just a normal man. He was a
great Filipino Genius, it’s the title I want to call him.
