ASSIGNMENT ONE

Answer the following questions in complete sentences.

1. the difference between ferrous and non-ferrous metals is that ferrous metals have iron and
non ferrous metals don’t have iron

2. The advantages of alloys over pure metal is that the layers of atoms cannot slide over
each other easily, making the whole alloy much stronger than any of the pure metals that
the alloy contains in isolation. Alloys also tend to have better corrosion resistance than
pure metals, and are more versatile for manipulating into different forms

3. the difference between corrosion of ferrous and non ferrous metals is that ferrous metals
corrode but non ferrous metals do not

4. The difference between mild steel and tool steel is that mild steels contain less than 1
percent carbon & tool steels contain up to 15 percent or more carbon.
5. the major advantage between mild steel and stainless steel is that stainless steel has a high
corrosion resistance.\

a. knives, pots, kitchen sink, spoons, forks

6. Duralumin is used in aircrafts because it is stronger as compared to steel and also for the
fact that it is lighter in weight

7.the reason copper is a good base is because the Pots that are made of copper are ideal heat
conductors; the material is durable, hygienic and corrosion-resistant. Above all, it is the excellent
heat conductivity that makes copper a perfect base material for pots and pans

8. copper pipes resist corrosion by forming a thin protective coating inside of the pipe and keep
their structural integrity well. This allows for a smaller-diameter pipe with maximum consistent
water flow. Thinner walls are also needed with copper pipe than other types of pipe.

9. Bronze is harder than copper as a result of alloying that metal with tin or other metals. Bronze
is also more fusible and is hence easier to cast. It is also harder than pure iron and far more
resistant to corrosion.

10. There are a couple of reasons I can think of. It's a fairly soft metal, which limits its utility in
tools. Also, it's got an unusual property that makes it a bad choice for anything that might get
reasonably cool: at temperatures below about 50 degrees Fahrenheit, tin slowly changes form
from "white tin" to "gray tin". Unlike white tin, gray tin is brittle and crumbles easily.
b. stainless steel, galvanized steel, brass
