Introduction:
The plastic limit is defined as the moister content in percent, at which the soil crumbles, when
rolled into threads of 3.2mm in diameter. When a cohesive soil is mixed with amount of water it
will be in a liquid state and flow like a viscous liquid. However, it will dry by the time passed but
still it will pass into plastic state, then it will change to semi solid state and then change to a
solid state with a very little amount of water. In this test we will learn how to find the liquid
limit of a soil.
Tools:
1- Spatula
2- Evaporating
3- Plastic bottle dish
4- Moisture can
5- Balance
6- Glass
7- Oven
Procedure:
First we pass soils from sieve No#40 and after that from that soil that passed from sieve No#40
we separate about 20gr and then we mixed that 20gr of soil with water and make soil gel and
after that on the glass plate we roll the gel till it gets the diameter of 1/8in and we make some
more samples and put it in oven until it become dry.
1. Weight of the can M1
2. Weight of the can and the soil gel M2
3. Weight of the can and the soil gel after the test and putting it in the oven M3
Calculation:
Weight of the can M1=24.9gr
Weight of the can and the soil gel M2=38.15gr
Weight of the can and the soil gel after the test and putting it in the oven M3=35.36gr
M 2  M 3 38.15  35.36 2.79
w    0.267
M 3  M 1 35.36  24.9 10.46

Conclusion: In this laboratory we have learned how to determine the plastic limit of soil by
plastic limit device.
