 Just because humans have the power to destroy Earth’s ecosystems doesn’t mean they
have the power to be its steward. It’s much easier to knock a building down than to
rebuild it. Earth, unlike a building, is still Earth even after it’s knocked down and has the
power to rebuild itself; just not in the course of your lifetime. If we destroy our habitat
eventually and extinguish the human species (unlikely, but if we do) then Earth will
bounce back with all the splendor and biodiversity it had before we started eroding it at
an exponential rate, but it will do so at a snails pace…
Can we mitigate the damage we’ve done somewhat and cease doing further damage?
Possible but unlikely.
We cannot, however, come even close to reversing the damage we’ve already done.
Just remember, it is not really the Earth we are damaging, which is fine and will be fine,
it’s our own habitat (and that of our contemporaneous terrestrial plant and animal
brethren) that we are taking the axe to, flight by flight, air conditioner by air
conditioner, convenience by convenience…
The Earth doesn’t need a steward - it can take care of itself.
