The AASHO Interim Guide method was developed after the AASHO Road Test to extend the test data. It assumes traffic can be converted to an equivalent single-wheel load and uses design charts to easily solve equations for terminal serviceability of roads. Thickness requirements are determined based on traffic, material properties and other parameters according to the AASHO method.

Guide (1) was developed subsequent to the AASHO Road Test (6). The equa - tion used to extend the AASHO data deals with stresses for a comer load. Fur - ther, Poisson's ratio was assumed to be 0.2 and the distance from the comer to the center of the load was taken as 10 inches.* In the method it is assumed that the traffic mix for a given highway can be converted to an equivalent single-wheel load as was described in Chapter 4 of this book. Figures 17.4 and 17.5 present two design charts for easy solution of the AASHO equations: for terminal serviceabilities of 2.0 (secondary roads) and 2.5 (primary roads). Working stress in the concrete is taken as 0.75 X MR. Table 17.5 shows thickness requirements by the AASHO method for various parameters of traffic, material properties, and so on. These are shown to demon- . The equation, although not presented here, is similar to that developed by Westergaard. The reader is referred to Chapter 3, equation 3.47 for the Westergaard equation.
