Basics of time
There are 24 hours in a day.
There are 60 minutes in an hour.
There are 60 seconds in a minute.
A day is the time between two sunrises.
We say o’ clock to represent which hour it is when telling the time.
Small division
showing minute and
second.
Big division
showing hour.
A clock has three hands. The hour hand, the minute hand and the second hand. The minute
hand tells you what hour it is. For example, in the clock above it is 1 o’ clock. Since, there are
60 minutes in one hour and 60 seconds in a minute there are sixty divisions on a clock that
shows you the minutes and seconds. These 60 divisions have big divisions and small division.
The big divisions on the clock like 1, 2, 3, 4 etc. are used to represent the hours. Between two
such big divisions there are four small divisions.
The minute hand moves one division after every full rotation of the second hand. The second
hand keeps moving. The hour hand moves from one big division to the next big division after
every full rotation of the minute hand. For example, in the above clock the minute hand
shows one minute, so the time is 1o’clock and 1 minute. After the minute hand has reached
the big division of 12 then the hour hand will be on the big division of 2.
