Animal Assisted Therapy

Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) is a type of therapy that uses animals to help people
who have physical, psychological, or social problems. Many different types of animals are
used in therapy. For example, AAT uses dogs, cats, birds, and horses. Therapists take
animals to hospitals, schools, and prisons so that people in need can interact with them.
AAT helps people learn life lessons. It also helps them overcome stress and injuries.
An animal, like a family pet, can help a person learn family values and responsibility. At the
same time, many people feel comfortable when touching animals. Caring for pets also
provides people with the chance to socialize with other pet owners. The use of horses is
another good example of how effective AAT can be. Through therapeutic riding, people can
exercise. They can build motor skills and improve balance. Moreover, being close to a horse
helps improve their ability to focus.
AAT offers many benefits. First of all, it allows therapists to use a single tool, an
animal, to achieve a number of goals. Physical goals increase a patient’s range of motion,
strength, balance, and sense of touch. Psychological goals help people overcome loneliness
and depression. Finally, social goals help people build relationships and increase self-
esteem. In sum, there may be no other form of therapy that offers such a wide variety of
benefits.
