WELCOME TO TACO NIGHT!

Tonight, you and your 4 friends will be throwing a party -

and this is not a regular party. It’s a taco party! You’ll be
asked to go grocery shopping to buy food for the party. The
taco night is for 5 people!

2
In this activity, you will be using the Mathematical
Modelling process. What does this mean?

We use Mathematical Modelling to analyze a real life situation,

and to try to find a solution. You’ve gained a lot of knowledge
in math class this year, and today you’ll see how everything
you’ve learned can be used in real life! You’ll be using all of
your knowledge in math to complete this activity. Also, some
of the Taco Night questions will ask you to pick between
several options. The thing about mathematical modelling is
that there’s not always one right answer!

3
MATERIALS NEEDED

● Scrap Paper
● Calculator
● Pencil
● Eraser
● Chromebook/laptop

4
INSTRUCTIONS
This is a group activity where you’ll complete some questions
individually, then you’ll complete and discuss some questions as a
group. This activity will be done in groups of 5. Check for your
groups in the announcement on Google Classroom.

There are 5 individual questions. Each person in your group

answers 1 question. Your teacher will assign the questions (in the
announcements on Google Classroom). You will complete your
assigned question on a blank sheet of paper. It’s your
responsibility to stay organized!

When everyone in your group is finished their question, you will

put all of your answers together to discuss and answer the group
questions. 5
INDIVIDUAL QUESTIONS
Each person in your group will
complete one question.

6
1. CHIPS AND
DIP!

7
It’s not a taco night without some chips and dip. We have
some chips at home, but we need to make some dip. Choose:

GUACAMOLE SALSA
OR
(go to slide 9) (go to slide 13)

8
INGREDIENTS FOR THE PERFECT
GUACAMOLE (1 serving)
➔ 1 avocado
➔ 1/2 a red onion
➔ 1/2 a lime
➔ 1 tomato
➔ 1 jalapeno

9
AT THE GROCERY STORE...
1. 1 avocado is $2.30
2. I can buy 1 bag of 5 red onions for $4.00, or onions
for 90 cents each. Which option is cheaper?
3. 1 lime is 30 cents.
4. With $6.50, you can buy 8 tomatoes (First, you’ll
have to find the price of 1 tomato).
5. 1 jalapeno is 10 cents.

Things to consider:
- Your taco night is for 5 people, so remember that when you make your calculations!
- Can you buy half a fruit or vegetable at the grocery store?
- There is a sample question on the next slide to help you!
10
Come up with an equation to figure out
the total price of the guacamole.
First, this is a sample equation. You can use this as a reference.
Julie goes to the grocery store to purchase 4 apples, 2 bananas and 1 mango.
a = Price of one apple = $2

b = Price of one banana = $1

c = Price of one mango= $3

Therefore, the equation for the total price is = 4a + 2b + c

4 (2) + 2(1) + 3 = 13 dollars

11
Once you’ve written out the equation,
figure out the total price of the
guacamole.
* Remember, our taco night is for 5 people.

2. VEGETABLES

17
VEGETABLES MAKE DELICIOUS TOPPINGS!
Pick two out of the three vegetables for your tacos.

3. TACO
SHELLS

19
How would we eat tacos
without the shells?!!
a) Calculate the total number of shells needed
Given the model below: for our taco night.
b) Calculate the average amount of taco shells
used.
Person 1: 3 taco shells c) Let’s say that 4 more groups of 5 people
Person 2: 4 taco shells joined our party. Calculate the average if each
person in every group used the same amount
Person 3: 5 taco shells
of taco shells as our group. Would the average
Person 4: 2 taco shells be the same? Would be different?
Person 5: 6 taco shells d) It turns out that person 5 actually wants 3
tacos, not 6! Find the correct total number of
shells and the correct mean. 20
Soft shell or Hard shell?
What Is the probability that your group of 5 will want soft
shell tacos?
What about hard shells?

Convert your answer to percentages (%).

How do your answers change if you round to the nearest
whole number?
Hint: for reference you can use the probability
of "heads or tails" by flipping a coin 21
HINT: You’ll have to look at
the model we used earlier. Now, figure out the total price of the
taco shells, for 5 people!
At the store, you can’t buy soft shells
and hard shells separately. There are
boxes that contain both hard shells
and soft shells. 1 box of 6 hard shell
and 6 soft shell tacos costs $2.43!

22
4. MEAT &
CHEESE

23
What should we fill our tacos with?
Decide if you group would like chicken or beef!
If you choose beef: How much ground
For $25.00 total we can buy x beef can we buy? Write an equation to
kilograms (kg) of ground beef. Each match this and solve. Write your
kilogram costs $7.67 answer in kilograms (kg)

For $30.00 total we can buy x If you choose chicken: How much
pounds (lbs) of chicken. Each pound chicken can we buy? Write an
equation to match this and solve.
costs $7.25 Write your answer in kilograms (kg)

Do you know
1 kg or lb is how many
sufficient kilograms are
for our taco in 1 pound?
night!
24
No taco is complete without cheese!
The amount of cheese in each taco depends on the number of scoops of meat.
With the equation c = 3m, we will figure out how much cheese is needed for one
taco.

c = 3m The variable m represents the number of scoops of meat each taco receives,
and the variable c represents the scoops of cheese in each taco.

a) If one taco receives 5 scoops of meat, how many scoops of cheese will be
on one taco?
b) There are 60 scoops of cheese in one bag. One bag of cheese costs $1.50.
Our group of 5 will eat 17 tacos in total. How many bags do we need?
c) How much will the cheese cost for our group?

25
5. DRINKS

26
We need some tasty drinks
to go along with our tacos!
A medium size juice
is $1.95
A large sized jug of orange juice can hold 550 ml A large size juice is
of juice. A medium jug of orange juice can hold $2.65.
300 ml of juice.

We need 2.5L of juice for our party. Figure out

how many jugs we need, and then figure out the
total price.

Things to consider:
- How many millilitres are in a litre? 27
TAKING IT FURTHER
Discuss the following as a group
*Please discuss in your Zoom Breakout Rooms and call the teacher
if you need help

28
Budgeting
Your total budget for all the
food at your Taco Night is $90.
Knowing this, come up with a specific grocery list and
expected costs with your group members.

Questions to think about: Are there any allergies in your

group? Do you want to add extra cheese or guac on your
tacos? How many people are you feeding at Taco Night? etc. 29
Checkout Line

You are ready to check out.

Which line do you choose?
The Express Lane only allows customers with 1-15 items.
The Self-Checkout Lane only allows customers with 1-25
items, but has 3 people in line with about 10 items each.
The Cashier Lane allows all customers, but has 4 people
in line with about 10 to 25 items each. What does your
group do? 30
Time
Management
It's 3:45 pm and you are
leaving the grocery store
Your Taco Night starts promptly at 5:30pm, but you still need to get
home in rush hour traffic, cook the meat, prepare the vegetables,
make the dip(s), grate the cheese, heat up the shells, pour the drinks
and set the table. Discuss with your group who is doing which
activity and how much time you have to prepare each item before
dinner time. We already know the traffic will delay you 1 hour. 31
Invitations
By accident, the word got out and
the whole class is coming to your
Taco Night
If you had enough food and money for Taco Night with
your group members, how can we find out how much
food to prepare and the costs of groceries for the whole
class to have a Taco Night? There are 25 people in your
class. Show your work and use manipulatives as needed.
32
Self-Assessment
Today, I learned...

I already knew about...

I'm still struggling with...

My next question is...

33
Group Assessment
As a team, we were successfully able to...

We found that...

...did not work well for our team

34
Hope you enjoyed Taco Night! Next LIVE Zoom
class, we will look over everyone's answers to
see if there are any similarities or differences.

35
Share your group's findings with your
parent(s)/guardian(s). Since you understand how to
budget your groceries, maybe you can help them at
the next grocery store trip for a Taco Night!

CURRICULUM CONNECTIONS
Strand: Algebra - Mathematical Modelling (Grade 6)
Overall Expectation: Students are expected to apply the process of
mathematical modelling to analyse, represent, make predictions, and provide
insight into real life problems and situations.

Specific Expectation: There are no specific expectations for mathematical

modelling because mathematical modelling is a process that is used in different
contexts, and students are expected to use concepts and skills that they learned
in other strands.

37
TEACHER NOTES
In this activity, students will use algebra skills and the mathematical
modelling process to pick ingredients for a taco night!

Students will work in teams, but they will work through the questions
individually. Then they will come together to discuss budgeting and final
totals.

Finally students will complete a self-assessment to reflect on the

activity.

Students would complete this activity at the end of the year, once all
strands of mathematics have been taught, since this activity consists of
questions from different strands. This allows students to use the
mathematical modelling process with different strands.

38
THE MATHEMATICAL MODELLING
PROCESS
1. Understand the question

2. Analyse the situation

3. Create a mathematical model

4. Analyse and assess the model
