INSTRUCTIONS
This is a group activity where you’ll complete some questions
individually, then you’ll complete and discuss some questions as a
group. This activity will be done in groups of 5. Check for your
groups in the announcement on Google Classroom.
6
1. CHIPS AND
DIP!
7
It’s not a taco night without some chips and dip. We have
some chips at home, but we need to make some dip. Choose:
GUACAMOLE SALSA
OR
(go to slide 9) (go to slide 13)
8
INGREDIENTS FOR THE PERFECT
GUACAMOLE (1 serving)
➔ 1 avocado
➔ 1/2 a red onion
➔ 1/2 a lime
➔ 1 tomato
➔ 1 jalapeno
9
AT THE GROCERY STORE...
1. 1 avocado is $2.30
2. I can buy 1 bag of 5 red onions for $4.00, or onions
for 90 cents each. Which option is cheaper?
3. 1 lime is 30 cents.
4. With $6.50, you can buy 8 tomatoes (First, you’ll
have to find the price of 1 tomato).
5. 1 jalapeno is 10 cents.
Things to consider:
- Your taco night is for 5 people, so remember that when you make your calculations!
- Can you buy half a fruit or vegetable at the grocery store?
- There is a sample question on the next slide to help you!
10
Come up with an equation to figure out
the total price of the guacamole.
First, this is a sample equation. You can use this as a reference.
Julie goes to the grocery store to purchase 4 apples, 2 bananas and 1 mango.
a = Price of one apple = $2

16
2. VEGETABLES
17
VEGETABLES MAKE DELICIOUS TOPPINGS!
Pick two out of the three vegetables for your tacos.
18
3. TACO
SHELLS
19
How would we eat tacos
without the shells?!!
a) Calculate the total number of shells needed
Given the model below: for our taco night.
b) Calculate the average amount of taco shells
used.
Person 1: 3 taco shells c) Let’s say that 4 more groups of 5 people
Person 2: 4 taco shells joined our party. Calculate the average if each
person in every group used the same amount
Person 3: 5 taco shells
of taco shells as our group. Would the average
Person 4: 2 taco shells be the same? Would be different?
Person 5: 6 taco shells d) It turns out that person 5 actually wants 3
tacos, not 6! Find the correct total number of
shells and the correct mean. 20
Soft shell or Hard shell?
What Is the probability that your group of 5 will want soft
shell tacos?
What about hard shells?
22
4. MEAT &
CHEESE
23
What should we fill our tacos with?
Decide if you group would like chicken or beef!
If you choose beef: How much ground
For $25.00 total we can buy x beef can we buy? Write an equation to
kilograms (kg) of ground beef. Each match this and solve. Write your
kilogram costs $7.67 answer in kilograms (kg)
For $30.00 total we can buy x If you choose chicken: How much
pounds (lbs) of chicken. Each pound chicken can we buy? Write an
equation to match this and solve.
costs $7.25 Write your answer in kilograms (kg)
Do you know
1 kg or lb is how many
sufficient kilograms are
for our taco in 1 pound?
night!
24
No taco is complete without cheese!
The amount of cheese in each taco depends on the number of scoops of meat.
With the equation c = 3m, we will figure out how much cheese is needed for one
taco.
c = 3m The variable m represents the number of scoops of meat each taco receives,
and the variable c represents the scoops of cheese in each taco.
a) If one taco receives 5 scoops of meat, how many scoops of cheese will be
on one taco?
b) There are 60 scoops of cheese in one bag. One bag of cheese costs $1.50.
Our group of 5 will eat 17 tacos in total. How many bags do we need?
c) How much will the cheese cost for our group?
25
5. DRINKS
26
We need some tasty drinks
to go along with our tacos!
A medium size juice
is $1.95
A large sized jug of orange juice can hold 550 ml A large size juice is
of juice. A medium jug of orange juice can hold $2.65.
300 ml of juice.
Things to consider:
- How many millilitres are in a litre? 27
TAKING IT FURTHER
Discuss the following as a group
*Please discuss in your Zoom Breakout Rooms and call the teacher
if you need help
28
Budgeting
Your total budget for all the
food at your Taco Night is $90.
Knowing this, come up with a specific grocery list and
expected costs with your group members.
33
Group Assessment
As a team, we were successfully able to...
We found that...
35
Share your group's findings with your
parent(s)/guardian(s). Since you understand how to
budget your groceries, maybe you can help them at
the next grocery store trip for a Taco Night!

CURRICULUM CONNECTIONS
Strand: Algebra - Mathematical Modelling (Grade 6)
Overall Expectation: Students are expected to apply the process of
mathematical modelling to analyse, represent, make predictions, and provide
insight into real life problems and situations.
37
TEACHER NOTES
In this activity, students will use algebra skills and the mathematical
modelling process to pick ingredients for a taco night!
Students will work in teams, but they will work through the questions
individually. Then they will come together to discuss budgeting and final
totals.
Students would complete this activity at the end of the year, once all
strands of mathematics have been taught, since this activity consists of
questions from different strands. This allows students to use the
mathematical modelling process with different strands.
