Why Policemen Should Carry Firearms

As a criminal justice major and a daughter of a detective, I have always had an interest

in the police force. Growing up, I was around mom’s co-workers and their kids. My parents

taught me the importance of police and the purposes they serve. I learned not to fear firearms

and learned to shoot and take care of them. Respect and correct caretaking is what I learned

young. My life experiences have taught me not to fear the police nor distrust them. They

protect and serve our country at the grassroots level. Here at Appalachian, the campus police

are here for the students and protect the campus. The purpose of this project is to inform

readers about the reasons why police officers carry firearms. It will look at UK police compared

to US police and why it is different. Also the militarization of police forces after 9/11. It will look

at the comparison between lethal and non-lethal weapons.

I will use google scholar and App library to find sources. One of the sources is an

experiment that analyzes the response of police in Great Britain. This will help compare and

analyze the difference in policing methods. An article, written by City and State: New York,

discusses the pros and cons of police carrying guns. In the article, the compare the number of

shooting in New York and England in 2019. The rise of militarization in the police force was

fueled by 9/11. Protecting the nation became increasingly important. People call for the police

to be defunded because they have too much power. That will be part of my counter-argument.

It will also look at the person and morality behind the gun in the conclusion.
