Starting with the desks, I chose seven round tables with four chairs for all my students. I
want them to be grouped together so they can collaborate with one another, socialize, and build
connections. The round tables are also helpful for when they have groupwork because they don’t
have to move their chairs or desks around. To accommodate for the students that want to work
individually, I chose the half horseshoe table with four chairs evenly spread out, so they can
work by themselves. I also chose four computers and chairs at the computer station for students
that want to work independently and need to use a computer and for students that don’t have
laptops to bring from home. I put enough space for the students and I to walk around the tables
and chairs, and for nothing to obstruct their view or get in the way. My desk is in a front corner
of the room so I can see everyone and easily access the projector screen and the whiteboards. I
provided room for me to walk in front of the class and for students to walk to their desks in front
of them as well. Behind my desk is a storage cabinet for my teaching supplies, so I can easily
access them. In this storage cabinet, I will store equipment, extra class materials, and other
materials, such as a first aid kit. I chose a printer to go next to it and next to the printer are my
classwork organizers. I will store the notes, forms, and papers for each class in there.
Then next to the classwork organizers is another storage cabinet for the students’
textbooks. This is where they will grab the textbooks they need for class, as well as turn in their
assignments. There will be a bottom shelf for the textbooks, a middle shelf to turn in work, and a
top shelf for other instructional materials. Next to the textbooks is the pencil sharpener on a
small desk and the classroom materials on another small desk with a clock on the wall and a
plant in between them. I placed them on the side of the wall, so students can easily access them
without them being in the way of their desks or view of the front of the class. I also chose to
include a plant in my layout to bring life to the classroom and freshen the room.
My favorite part of my layout is the reading corner. There is a huge rug, four beanbags,
and two bookcases for my students’ leisure. I wanted the reading corner to feel homey and
comfortable for them since the reading corner is for when they complete all their work in class or
when they come early or stay late to class and need a space to hang out. In addition, I have two
bulletin boards in the classroom. The one next to the reading corner will display classroom rules,
a list of daily assignments, and a calendar. I placed it in the middle of the classroom in the back
so everyone can see it. The one near the wastebasket will display student work, decorative items,
and a decorative display. I placed it near the door so students can see their work and something
to brighten their day before leaving class. I also placed the wastebasket there so they can throw
away their trash before leaving as well.
Lastly, I have two storage cabinets in a back corner of the room. One is for student work
and student-owned materials. Students will store their work-in-progress and bulky personal items
here. The other one is for seasonal or infrequently used items and special project materials. I

placed the first one there because there was a lot of room and students can easily put their items
there before walking to their seats or pick them up after class is over. I placed the second one
there because I will rarely go to that storage cabinet and it’s better for it to be out of the way than
in another part of the class. I used Icovia Room Planner from The Library Store to design my
layout and I liked how it came out.
