INTRODUCTION

Hevea brasiliensis, the Pará rubber tree, sharinga tree, or, most commonly, the rubber tree, is a tree
belonging to the family Euphorbiaceae. It is the most economically important member of the
genus Hevea. It is of major economic importance because the milky latex extracted from the tree is the
primary source of natural rubber.

The Pará rubber tree initially grew only in the Amazon Rainforest. Increasing demand and the discovery
of the vulcanization procedure in 1839 led to the rubber boom in that region, enriching the cities
of Belém and Manaus. The name of the tree derives from Pará, the second-largest Brazilian state, the
capital of which is Belém.

These trees were used to obtain rubber by the natives who inhabited its geographical distribution.
The Olmec people of Mesoamerica extracted and produced similar forms of primitive rubber from
analogous latex-producing trees such as Castilla elastica as early as 3600 years ago. The rubber was
used, among other things, to make the balls used in the Mesoamerican ballgame. Early attempts were
made in 1873 to grow H. brasilensis outside Brazil. After some effort, 12 seedlings were germinated at
the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. These were sent to India for cultivation, but died. A second attempt
was then made, some 70,000 seeds being smuggled to Kew in 1875, by Henry Wickham, at the service
of the British Empire. About 4% of these germinated, and in 1876, about 2000 seedlings were sent,
in Wardian cases, to Ceylon (modern day Sri Lanka) and 22 were sent to the Botanic Gardens in
Singapore. Once established outside its native country, rubber was extensively propagated in the
British colonies. Rubber trees were brought to the botanical gardens at Buitenzorg, Java, in 1883. By
1898, a rubber plantation had been established in Malaya, and today, most rubber tree plantations are
in South and Southeast Asia, with some also in tropical West Africa.

Efforts to cultivate the tree in South America (Amazon) were unsatisfactory because of blight. The
blight, called South American leaf blight, is caused by the Ascomycota, Microcyclus ulei
or Pseudocercospora ulei.

Natural rubber 1 , also called caoutchouc, as initially produced, consists of polymers of the organic
compound isoprene, with minor impurities of other organic compounds plus water. Forms of
polyisoprene that are used as natural rubbers are classified as elastomers. Currently, rubber is
harvested mainly in the form of the latex from certain trees. The latex is a sticky, milky colloid drawn off
by making incisions into the bark and collecting the fluid in vessels in a process called "tapping". The
latex then is refined into rubber ready for commercial processing. Natural rubber is used extensively in
many applications and products, either alone or in combination with other materials. In most of its
useful forms, it has a large stretch ratio and high resilience, and is extremely waterproof.

Rubber latex is extracted from rubber trees. The economic life period of rubber trees in plantations is
around 32 years – up to 7 years of immature phase and about 25 years of productive phase.

i
The soil requirement of the plant is generally well-drained, weathered soil consisting of laterite, lateritic
types, sedimentary types, nonlateritic red, or alluvial soils.

The climatic conditions for optimum growth of rubber trees are:

• Rainfall of around 250 cm evenly distributed without any marked dry season and with at least
100 rainy days per year

• Temperature range of about 20 to 34°C, with a monthly mean of 25 to 28°C

• High atmospheric humidity of around 80%

• Bright sunshine amounting to about 2000 hours per year at the rate of six hours per day
throughout the year

• Absence of strong winds

Many high-yielding clones have been developed for commercial planting. These clones yield more than
2,000 kg of dry rubber per hectare per year, when grown under ideal conditions.

Rubber tree (Hevea brasilliensis) is one of the main agricultural commodities of Indonesia, so it has a
good prospect for the future. Therefore, the efforts to increase farm productivity of rubber (Hevea
brasilliensis) through introduction the new technologies and use some goods quality clones
continuously improved. Indonesia is one of world's rubbers exporting country in Asia. More than half of
the rubber used today is synthetic, but several million tonnes of natural rubber are still produced every
year, and still is an important material for several industries including automotive and military.

PLANTATION PROJECT AND PROGRAM 2014

Below are the summary of project and program applied in BPA’s Plantation 2015:

NUTRIENT PROGRAMS

BPA has combined the techniques of nutrient providing in rubber plantation to keep continuity of

nutrient.

ORGANIC NUTRIENT

Below are the organic material that has been applied in location.

Black Soil / Factory waste.

Black soil rich of organic nutrient that needed by the trees. Black soil is a waste product or Lump

Rubber residual. There are some weakness and advantage of Black soil/ Factory waste.

Advantage :

• Black soil can support critical/poor area and provide nutrient for 3 months. Rich of Nutrient,

Macro and Micro nutrient, can restore the growth become normal.

Weakness :

• Erosion Problem/ not resist with erosion.

• Need big quantity to sufficient trees nutrient.

• Slow release.

• For smaller tree/new plant, new black soil from boxes can be toxic because of acid

contaminant.

8
9
Chicken Manure
Chicken manure is a good nutrient for the trees, can boost the growth, fast release.

in Cikolek we give it directly for the trees with the dosage, 1 bag for 4 trees.

10
Semi Liquid Bokashi
Mixed Chicken manure + Back Soil (Semi Liquid Bokashi) fermented with EM4 (Effective Micro-Micro
Organism) is really effective to boost
st growth of small trees, this method applied in Kangboy.

11
CHEMICAL NUTRIENT
There are 3 chemical fertilizer that we have used for sufficient the nutrient :

Urea, NPK, and Dolomite.

Urea
Urea or carbamide is an organic compound with the chemical formula CO(NH2)2. The molecule has two
–NH2 groups joined by a carbonyl (C=O) functional group.

Urea serves an important role in the metabolism of nitrogen-containing

nitrogen containing compounds by animals,
animals and is
the main nitrogen containing substances in the urine of mammals.
mammals. It is colorless, odorless solid, highly
soluble in water, and practically non toxic.

More than 90% of world industrial production of urea is destined for use as a nitrogen-release
nitrogen release fertilizer.
Urea has the highest nitrogen content of all solid nitrogenous
nitrogenous fertilizers in common use. Therefore , it
has the lowest transportation costs per unit of nitrogen nutrient. The standard crop-nutrient
crop nutrient rating (NPK
ratig) of urea is 46-0-0.

Urea is usually spread at rates of between 40 and 300 kg/Ha but rates vary. Smaller
Smaller applications incur
lower losses dueto leaching. During summer, urea is often spread just before or during rain to minimize
losses from volatilization (process wherein nitrogen is lost to the atmosphere as ammonia gas). Urea is
not compatible with other fertilizers.

Urea applied only in some parts of Cikolek area especially for small trees and trees that will get extra
treatment to stimulate the trees.

12
NPK
NPK fertilizers are three-component fertilizers providing nitrogen(N), phosphorus(P), and potassium(K).
NPK rating is a rating system describingmthe amount of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in a
fertilizer. NPK ratings consist of three numbers separated by dashes (e.g., 10-10-10 or 16-4-8)
describing the chemical content of fertilizers.

Three main macronutrients in NPK :

• Nitrogen (N) : leaf growth;

• Phosphorus (P) : Development of roots, flowers, seeds, and fruit;
• Potassium (K) : strong stem growth, movement of water in plants, promotion of flowering and
fruiting.

(Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fertilizer)

BPA plantation implements 2 times application a Year every May and November with 100 Gr/tree
dosages. In the weather circle, May is the end of rain season (short season: April only) and November
is the beginning of rain season (long season: End of October to End of January).

13
Dolomite/Kieserite
Dolomite is a mineral that contain nutrients; Magnesium (Mg) and Calcium (Ca) in the form of powder
with the chemical formula CaMg(CO3)2.

Dolomite is the main solution for agriculture, plantations and farms are cultivated on soil that reacts
acidic. Magnesium in Dolomite to help trees/crop healing from stress and adaptation of new
environment. Mg also can increase the trees immunity from disease and fungus. Plant suffering from
Mg or Magnesium Deficiency can be characterized by yellowing of leaves, thus losing the ability to
absorb CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) and produce O2.

Calcium (Ca) in Dolomite/Kieserite is able to neutralize the PH environment in rooting area.

14
REGULAR PROGRAMS
There are some regular programs in BPA plantation for grass clearing, mechanical and chemical
clearing.

MECHANICAL CLEARING
Mechanical slashing use brush cutter machines. Now we use 2-strokes engine brush cutter machine,
last October We has introduced 4-Strokes engine that claimed more efficient in fuel consumption and
spark plug.

Clearing grass using machine, machine specification below:

Honda Grass Slashing Machine

Engine Type : 4 Stroke Engine

Oil/Usage : Yamalube 4T/800ml
Weight : Avg 8 Kgs
Fuel : Gasoline
Fuel Consumption : 2 Liters/Day

Grass slashing technique using growth line cutting / only apply in growth line.

CHEMICAL HERBICIDE
Herbicide we have used in Plantation are Glyphosate and methyl metsulfuron. The combination of this
two types of herbicide can create wide spectrum of a lot types of grass.

Two techniques of herbicide application are Line system and circle system. In Kangboy we used Line
system for controlling grass also to prevent erosion. In Cikolek we used circle system also to control
and prevent erosion. In Kangboy application of line system adjusted of planting pattern 3 x 6 m, can
create clear line along tree line. In Cikole cannot applied line system because the planting pattern is 4 x
4 m, it will consumes more herbicide for application, so we use circle system. The application of these
techniques for Over 1 Years old tree. In 2015 Cikolek start applying Line system in some area in Kebun
Dalam, KM 34, KM 35, and KM 36.

LAND RECOVERY
Land recovery is an effort to grab non-productive
non productive land (Swamp/payao) becoming a productive land by
creating the drainage system and clearing the forest in Swamp/payao area to get more land for
planting. The Recovery Project using Excavator or we called “Kobe”.

This project has been start on September 2013. On 2014 we have got the land recovery 19.22 Ha in
KM 36 then continue again on September 2014 to October
October 2015 with the result 22.9 Ha in KM 35. The
rest of land to be recovered in KM 35 is 9.38 Ha, This part of project has been started in November
