INTRODUCTION

ABOUT THE INDUSTRY

5
Fast food is one of the world largest fast growing industry types. India fast food industry is growing by

40%. The 6000 corer fast food retail industry is mainly dominated by the multinational

players and the key players which are active in the research of the food retailing Because

of the availability of raw material for fast food, global chains are flooding into the

country. The percentage share held by foodservice of total consumer expenditure on

food has increased from a very low base to stand at 2.6% in 2001 Eating at home

remains very much in grained in Indian culture and changes in eating habits are very slow

moving with barriers to eating out entrenched in certain sectors of Indian society. The

growth in nuclear families, particularly in urban India, exposure to global media and

western cuisine and an increasing number of women joining the workforce have had an impact on

eating out trends.

6
 It entered India in June 1996.

● By January 2001, Pizza Hut had 19 outlets across India.

● Presently it has 360 outlets in 100 cities in India.

● Pizza Hut is one of the world’s largest pizza chains with over 15,000 restaurants

across 91 countries.

●It employees more than 30,000 people.

● It entered India in 1996 through a franchise agreement with VamBhartia Corp.

● It had quite a speedy growth (1 outlet in 1996 and 101 in 2001).

●Emphasis on home delivery

7
●Today Domino’s Pizza in India has grown into a countrywide network of more than

1000.

●Domino’s believes strongly in the strategy of “think local and act regional”.

COMPANY PROFILE

In the land of tandoori rotis and masala dosas, does Italian food have any place? Yes, say

the statistics. The pizza industry is really sizzling with hectic activity. The Rs. 150-crore

industry, growing at an annual rate of 50 per cent, is expanding at a frantic pace.

The two major players, Domino's Pizza India Ltd. and Tricon Restaurants International

(which owns the Domino's Pizza and Pizza Hut chains), are silently rejoicing the

exponential growth.

8
PIZZA HUT'S MISSION STATEMENT

We take pride in making a perfect pizza and providing courteous and helpful service on

time all the time.

We are the employer of choice offering team members opportunities for Growth,

Advancement, And Rewarding Careers in a Fun, Safe Working Environment.

When it comes to tossing around dough, no one does it more often than Pizza Hut. The

unit of YUM! Brands operate the world's #1 pizza chain with more than 15,000 outlets in

about 91 countries worldwide. The chain serves a variety of pizza styles, including its

flagship Pan Pizza, as well as Thin n' Crispy, Stuffed Crust, Hand Tossed, and Sicilian.

Other menu items include pasta, salads, and sandwiches. Pizza Hut offers dine-in service

at its characteristic red-roofed restaurants, as well as carry-out and delivery service. About

15% of the restaurants are company-operated, while the rest are franchised. The world's

largest fast food company, YUM! Brand runs KFC and Taco Bell in addition to Pizza Hut.

In India, Pizza Hut has 360 restaurants across 100 cities, including Delhi, Mumbai,

Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Pune, and Chandigarh amongst others. Yum! is

in the process of opening Pizza Hut restaurants at many more locations to serve a larger

customer base across the country.

Pizza Hut is split into several different restaurant formats; the original family-style dine-in

locations; store front delivery and carry-out locations; and hybrid locations that offer

carry-out, delivery, and dine-in options. Many full-size Pizza Hut locations

offer lunch  buffet, with "all-you-can-eat" pizza, salad, bread sticks, and a special pasta.

Additionally, Pizza Hut also has a number of other business concepts that are different

9
from the store type; Pizza Hut "Bistro" locations are "Red Roofs which offer an expanded

menu and slightly more upscale options.

"Pizza Hut Express" and "The Hut" locations are fast food restaurants. They offer a

limited menu with many products not found at traditional Pizza Huts. These types of

stores are often paired in a collocated location with a sibling brand such

as WingStreet, KFC or Taco Bell, and are also found on college campuses, food courts,

theme parks, and in stores such as Target and Walmart.

Vintage "Red Roof" locations can be found throughout the United States, and quite a few

exist in the UK and Australia. Even so, many such locations offer delivery/carryout

service. This building style was common in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The name

"Red Roof" is somewhat anachronistic now, since many locations have brown roofs.

Dozens of "Red Roofs" have closed or been relocated/rebuilt. Many "Red Roof" branches

have beer if not a full bar, music from a jukebox, and sometimes an arcade. In the mid

1980s, the company moved into other successful formats including delivery/carryout and

the fast food "Express" model.

Having completed 20 years of operations in India, casual dining chain Pizza Hut is

looking to enhance its presence across the country and run 700 outlets by 2021.

Besides strengthening retail presence, Pizza Hut is also looking to expand its product

offerings to consumers.

The Pizza Hut franchisee stepped into the Indian fast food market by opening a dine-in

restaurant at Bangalore in 1996. The pizza franchise soon expanded itself in India and now

has the KFC brand beneath its umbrella. The fast food franchise was the first international

10
fast food firm to make an entry into the Indian scene and has thus pioneered the Indian

pizza market.

The menu provided at the Pizza Hut franchise is that of a complete meal. Customers are

considered as honoured guests at the fast food franchise and are treated accordingly. It is

the customer satisfaction provided by the specialty

food franchise that enabled it to position itself at the

top of the Indian fast food market.

The fast food franchise also ensures that it adds an

Indian touch to all the varieties of pizzas that it

makes available to Indian customers. Various

delicious combinations are tested at the Indian Pizza

Hut franchisee outlets by blending the original menu with Indian favourites to make fresh

salads, garlic based breads, soups, yummy pastas and delicious desserts.

The employees of the restaurant support centre of the Pizza Hut fast food franchise which

functions in New Delhi works hard to place Pizza Hut at the top of Indian market. The

support centre takes care of finance, legal and marketing sides of the Indian operations of

Pizza Hut franchisees.

Pizza Hut is known for

· Good Quality Food (Hygiene)

· Brand Name

· Good Service

· New Kinds and Styles of Pizzas in its Menu

"Customers are the reason that we are here."

 No customers-No Pizzas

That’s the secret ingredient.

The 5 secret principles:

 Employees are our secret ingredients.

 Show your "care".

 Say "yes" to customers

 Satisfied, capable teams create satisfied customers.

 Satisfied customers create profit and growth

PIZZA HUT IS ALL ABOUT

It’s all about you and all about customers i.e. customer creation and customer retention

through customer satisfaction, it’s all about team spirit in order to attain good results.

TELEPHONE CALLS:

The employees are not allowed to make or receive personal telephone calls at work unless

in an emergency. The restaurant has limited telephone lines. By keeping the telephone

occupied, we may be denying customer access to us and he may call the competition

instead.

This is the extent to which they go to be with their customer.

20
Pizza Hut has taken care to make special sauces which do not contain any garlic or onion.

The Pizza Hut restaurant has planned to offer wide choices of vegetarian pizzas,

vegetarian pastas, steaming tomato and mulligatawny soup, crunchy French bread, fresh

salads in their world famous salad bar and delicious desserts.

21
DOMINOS

Dominos Pizza is the second largest franchised pizza chain in the U.S.A., and the history

of Dominos Pizza is similar to its rival Pizza hut; two brothers started it with borrowed

equity in the sixties. Tom and James Monaghan bought a small Michigan Pizzeria called

Dominick's, which was jointly run by them until James traded his share for a second hand

car. Tom revitalized the image by changing the name to Domino’s Pizza.

By the late seventies there were over 200 franchise pizza businesses in the States and

Dominos Pizza was ready to go International. In 1983 Dominos Pizza opened its doors in

Winnipeg, and in the same year opened its one thousandth stores. Later that same year

Domino's corporate history was to begin in Australia with its first franchise in Brisbane,

on the East coast.

The locations for Dominos Pizza grew quickly from here as they sprung up in all sorts of

diverse places including Bogotá. Despite Domino's Pizza springing up diverse locations,

they were still a very traditional company. Domino's Pizza menu had been kept very

simple and streamlined; they only sold one type of pizza crust which they named the

regular pizza. Domino's Pizza dough was shaped by tossing the dough and pulling it into

shape. The pizza menu included just two sizes of dough, it was not until much later that

competition forced them to add a medium and extra large sized pizza. There were no such

things as side orders you could have Pizza, pizza or Pizza and you could only drink a

Coke with it.

In 1989 the history of Domino's Pizza was to change when the Deep Pan pizza was

introduced, for the first time in twenty five years the company was being forced to react to

22
market demand. This move consolidated the financial base and ensured the growth of

Domino's Pizza, as the same year they opened their five thousandth store.

The wind of change had started and by 1992 they were to introduce the first non pizza

item to their menu, this was obviously a reluctant move as it was bread sticks. Domino

Pizza dough was already on hand and the making of bread sticks is not so different.

For many years the company had advertised that if the delivery of their pizzas took longer

than thirty minutes then the pizza would be delivered free. This was parodied by the

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie which specified the "pizza dude has 30 seconds" to

complete the delivery. The turtle’s pizza was late and they received a refund of $3 for

"being two minutes late, dude!" However the benefits to Domino Pizza were enormous as

millions of kids were to hear the name of Domino’s Pizza endorsed on celluloid. In 1993

Domino Pizza discontinued this policy and stated that if a customer was unhappy they

could have a new pizza or a refund.

23
ABOUT THE TOPIC

PIZZA HUT AND DOMINO’S- A COMPARISON

Pizza Hut has many unique features of their product due to which it attracts the

customers. The product is classified into non durable goods as it is a food item.

Pizza Hut differentiates itself from its competitors with the help of their wide range

of offerings (menu items). One can find besides pizzas; a wide range of pastas,

appetizers, cakes and desserts etc. There are quite a lot number of menu items to

choose.

Domino’s pizza India has maintained its position in the market with its constant

product innovation and maintenance of stringent services standards. More

importantly, it has established a reputation for being a home delivery specialist

capable of delivering its pizzas within 30 minutes to its community of loyal

customers from its entire chain of stores around the country. As the name suggests

‘the pizza delivery experts’; customers can order their pizzas by calling their

hotline. Domino’s believes strongly in the strategy of ‘think local act regional’.

Also they had their promotional campaign ‘hungry kya?’ which means call up

dominos if one is hungry and have the food in 30 minutes.

Comparing both pizzas lies on certain criteria. It is quite evident that Pizza Hut is more

superior to Domino’s Pizza when it comes to taste, while Domino’s Pizza boasts at its

24
affordability and average but satisfying product. But other things still matter in winning

over a customer or an avid pizza-eater. One is convenience. Since Domino’s has a lot of

branches worldwide, one can easily spot a Domino’s outlet compared to Pizza Hut, thus

people tend to go for what is closest. Another is value and obviously Pizza Hut gives more

value thus more costly. Menu selection also matters to people who want variations and

Domino’s basically fail in this category if compared to Pizza Hut.

Choosing which pizza to buy is practically one’s personal preference. Regardless of

Domino’s limited offers and Pizza Hut’s very expensive pizza, people still patronize them

making their business what they are today.

In brief:

• Pizza Hut and Domino’s Pizza started early in the business and has gained popularity

among consumers and made a worldwide impact evidenced by their growing franchises.

• Pizza Hut is the more expensive pizza compared to Domino’s pizza but Domino’s have

more branches catering to a lot of people, making it more convenient to them.

• Pizza Hut offers more varieties in their menus compared to Domino’s pizza.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

26
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research methodology is a way to solve the research problem in a systematic manner. It

may understand as a science of studying how the research is done significantly. The

methodology may differ from problem to problem, yet the basic approach towards the

research remains the same.

OBJECTIVES

 To conduct survey analysis on the consumer preference of food joint

amongst PIZZA HUT and DOMINO’S in India.

 To find out which factors are more preferred by the customers while choosing

among the two.

 To shed light on different aspects that a service based food chain must follow in

order to increase its market share and for being on a continuous growth path.

 To compare their market share in the fast food industry.

 To analyze the reasons behind their success, especially among the youth

of the country.

There are two types of data:

27
Primary data –Primary data is that data which is collected for the first time and is

also called “first hand data”. These data are basically observed and collected by the

researcher for the first time. Examples are: questionnaires, surveys, etc.

Secondary data –Secondary data are those data which are collected by the other

persons for his/her own purpose and when others use that data for solving their

purpose, it becomes secondary data, i.e. , data collected by one person becomes

secondary data for the other.

DATA COLLECTION:

 Secondary data was collected from media publishing and Internet.

 Primary data was collected with the help of questionnaires and friends, relatives

were contacted personally for collecting the primary data.

 A sample of 70 respondents has been taken for this project.

CHAPTER-6

CONCLUSION

43
CONCLUSIONS

 More people prefer Domino’s rather than Pizza Hut.

 Price is a major factor when it comes to choosing a pizza brand. Pizza Hut is more
