Pollution control equipment in coal-fired power plants is a ₹3.96-lakh crore

industry

new study into the cost and benefits of installing pollution control equipment in

India’s thermal power plants has estimated the bill that the sector will be plastered

with at ₹3.91-3.96 lakh crore till 2030.

Equipment such as flue gas desulphuriser, catalytic reducer and electrostatic

precipitators alone will account for ₹2.57 lakh crore — the rest will be the spends

for operations and maintenance and consumables. This is a huge opportunity for

the manufacturing industry.

This estimate is almost the same as the one made earlier by the Association of

Power Producers, which put the capital costs at ₹2.80 lakh crore. But the study on

in India’ by the Centre for Science, Technology and Policy (C-STEP), covers a

greater number of plants — 263 GW of capacity till 2030.

The C-STEP estimate is also substantially higher than another estimate of the

Centre for Science and Technology, which put the capital costs of pollution control

equipment at ₹71,700 crore, but it covered 169 GW.

Modi govt to achieve 50-million LPG connection target by August 15

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s flagship project Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana

(PMUY) is set to provide 50 million free cooking gas connections by August 15,

seven months ahead of the March 2019 target it had set earlier.

Ujjwala Yojana was launched on May 1, 2016 at Ballia district in Uttar Pradesh and

has so far covered 47.3 million consumers in 715 districts. This is likely to be one

of the key highlights in the list of achievements that the Modi government will

highlight in the run-up to next year’s Lok Sabha elections and may feature in his

speech during the 72nd Independence Day celebrations. The price of subsidised

liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), however, has increased by 18.4 per cent from

Rs419.15 per cylinder to Rs496.26 from May 2016 till now in Delhi.
