This is what Mr. Utterson says:

“One night, Richard Enfield saw a young girl. She wanted to get a doctor
because her mother was ill. There was a short, deformed man behind her.
He stole the girl´s money. My cousin Richard Enfield saw him and stopped
him, but he did not take him to the police. He said “You must give me the
girl´s money.” The strange small man disappeared into a mysterious door
and came back with a check. The check had Dr. Jekyll´s name and
signature, and it was original. Did the mysterious man know Dr. Jekyll?

Richard found that the mysterious door was connected with Dr. Jekyll´s
house. He investigated and found a document which said “When I´m
dead, Mr. Hyde gets all my possessions. In case of disappearance, Mr.
1
Hyde gets all my possessions too.” There was a name at the bottom of the
page, and it said Henry Jekyll. That was strange. Who was this man? Why
did Dr. Jekyll protect him?

One year later, Hyde killed a man called Danvers. With Richard´s help, the
police found Hyde´s apartment, but they didn´t find him. I decided to talk
to Dr. Jekyll because I was sure he knew something. Jekyll told me that
Hyde was a kind of assistant, not a very good friend. He also told me that
Hyde was not in his house. He showed me a goodbye note from Hyde. I
read the note, and I was shocked! The handwriting was Dr. Jekyll´s. That
was very strange. Finally, Richard discovered that Hyde and Dr. Jekyll
were really the same person, and Dr. Jekyll commited suicide.
