Dear parents and guardians, Dec. 4, 2020

The Davis School District has been informed by the Davis County Health Department that Syracuse High
School has again reached more than 15 confirmed cases of individuals with the COVID-19 virus over the
last 14 days. According to the COVID-19 School Manual, any school with 15 or more confirmed cases
across multiple settings in a school will result in a closure of the school building for 14 days.

While the standard procedure would be to put the school into soft closure on Monday, Dec. 7, and move
to remote learning, Davis School District, in coordination with the Utah Department of Health and the
Davis County Health Department, is piloting a “Test to Stay” program to keep our school open.

In order for the school to remain open, at least 80 percent of our student body needs to participate in
the pilot and voluntarily submit to a free rapid COVID test. If that 80 percent threshold is not reached,
our school will go into soft closure and students will take part in remote learning through Friday, Dec.
18. (Winter Break begins Monday, Dec. 21.)

If you choose not to have your child tested, he or she will be quarantined starting Tuesday, Dec. 8
through Dec. 18. During that time, your child will still be able to access course content (though not full
class sessions) through CANVAS. Teachers will work with your student as with other absent/quarantine
students and will be available on Fridays to support your student.

Details regarding the testing are as follows:

• Prior to Monday, December 7, you as a parent or guardian, must consent for your child to be
tested. That consent can be given by logging into your child’s myDSD account.
• Students will attend school as normal on Monday.
• During the day, students who have been given parental consent will leave class for a free rapid
COVID test.
• After a student is tested, they will return to class. It takes about 15-20 minutes for the results of
the test to be determined.
• If the test is negative, the student will continue to attend school.
• If the test is positive, you will be notified, and your child will be sent home with additional
information.
• If your child is absent on Monday, the school will provide them a letter that will enable them to
get tested at the district testing site in the Freeport Center.

We love our students and feel this gives us the best opportunity to safely keep our school open.
In-person schooling allows us to provide the highest quality education. It also allows our students critical
