E Description

Engagement TTW begin by introducing the lesson. Today we will be talking about where we
live! First, let’s talk about what we live on. Do we live on land with the green
grass and dirt? Or do we live on the blue water? I’ve brought in some dirt and
grass, and some water for us to feel of before we all share our answers. I will
bring the dirt and grass around first for you to feel. Notice how it is hard and dry.
What colors do you see? How does is smell and feel to you? Ok, now let’s feel
of the water. It is wet and a little cold. So which one of these is under your feet
when you walk outside here at school or at your house?

Now that we have all agreed that we live on the land, let’s look at a map of our
state, Alabama, and our country, the United States of America. The link to this
website, https://www.ducksters.com/geography/state.php?State=Alabama will
show us our state boundaries and country boundaries on the North American
continent, along with some interesting facts about our state.
On this map I want you to color the water blue and the land green. Notice that
we see the United States outlined in the middle of the map of North America.

Engagement Coloring the map blue for water and green for land.

Exploration Plum’s Island Explorer: Land and Water

landwatergame/plums-island-explorer-land-and-water/
This is a fun, interactive game to learn about different bodies of water and land.
There are streams, rivers, lakes, and oceans. We will also see flat land, hills,
valleys, and mountains. Plum’s Island also makes you aware that trash left on
the ground or in the water is not okay, and it always needs to go into a trash
can. We will pair up into groups of two to navigate through this hands-on virtual
experience online. You must collaborate with your partner to get to the end of
the experience and visit each platform.

Once everyone is finished with their virtual experience, we will take a short 5
question quiz on Kahoot! to check your knowledge on identifying land and
water.

Exploration Kahoot! land vs. water game/quiz

Assessment

Explanation At this time, we will cover vocabulary words of land, water, map, mountains,
rivers, lakes, state, and country. We will utilize the Smartboard to Google these
vocabulary words as a whole group. TSW help me decide on an easy-to-
remember definition for each word. TSW locate pictures on the Smartboard to
drag next to the vocabulary words for further clarification for all members of the
class.
After defining the words and matching pictures to the words on the board, TTW
pull down a map of the United States and have the students help her put labels
on the United States, Alabama, Mobile Bay, the Mississippi River, the Great
Lakes, the Appalachian Mountains, and the Rocky Mountains.

Explanation Match pictures to vocabulary words.

Assessment
Help label parts of the map.

Elaboration For the Elaboration part of our lesson each student will create their own Kahoot!
game using my Kahoot! game from the Exploration stage as an example. I will
assist each student through creating a Kahoot! game using their chosen
pictures, while guiding them as necessary with question choices and answers.
