COURSE SYLLABUS
YEAR LEVEL 3
This course provides the third-year medical students with the entire scope of
child health and the common diseases of all pediatric age groups from newborn,
childhood, and adolescence. The students will be able to determine the etiology,
pathophysiology, diagnosis, management, and prevention of these common pediatric
conditions. Teaching strategies consist of lectures, small group discussions, video
showing and interactive sessions.
At the end of this course students should be able to construct a thorough history
and physical examination and manage pediatric diseases.

Following the Outcome-Based Curriculum, Pediatric 2 will be geared towards enabling the
third-year medical student to achieve the following learning outcomes with their corresponding
level of emphasis:
At the end of the course, the third-year student must be able to:
1. Skillfully perform a comprehensive and organized pediatric history. (SLO1, SLO2, SLO4,
SLO6, SLO7, SLO9)
2. Determine the anatomic, physiologic, and pathophysiologic basis of each system based
pediatric problems. (SLO1, SLO2, SLO3, SLO5, SLO6, SLO7, SLO9)
3. Develop an initial expression with a set of differential diagnosis based on a patient
history and physical examination findings. (SLO1, SLO2, SLO3, SLO4, SLO6, SLO8,
SLO9)
4. Apply an appropriate patient centered diagnostic and therapeutic plan of management
for a given pediatric patient. (SLO1, SLO2, SLO3, SLO4, SLO6, SLO9)
> Plan of treatment for emergency care, definitive care, and long-
term/rehabilitative care for various respiratory diseases
> Health education to families to prevent complications
GASTROENTROLOGY > Common gastrointestinal presenting problem/complaint.
> Differential diagnosis and diagnostic procedure
> Principles of management
UROLOGY AND > Presenting signs and symptoms of the ten (10) most common
NEPHROLOGY renal syndromes.
> Epidemiologic basis of the common renal syndromes.
> Laboratory work-up for the 10 common renal syndromes
> Principles of management of common renal disorders
BONES AND JOINTS > Evaluation common orthopedic problems
> Principles of management and patient follow up
PEDIATRIC > Basic Life Support
EMERGENCIES/ > Pediatric Advanced Life Support
BURNS/INJURIES > Epidemiology of burn injuries
> Types and depth of burn injuries
> Body surface charts
> Pathophysiologic changes due to burn injuries
> Medical procedures in the emergency phase of burn injuries
> Referral to a Burn Center
> Burn Complication
> Rehabilitation program of patients
> Common Childhood Injuries
> Preventive measures
CRITICAL CARE > Clinically diagnose common emergency problems probable cause
through appropriate workups
> Plan of treatment for common disorders
> Treatment for the most common emergency condition
> Onset and presence of complications, need for further treatment
DERMATOLOGY > Common dermatological problems seen in the pediatric age
group
> Diagnostic examinations for cutaneous problems and interpret
result
> Principles of management of common pediatric dermatological
problems
> Appropriate plan for preventive care, patient follow-up
PHARMACOLOGY > Computation and prescription writing
> Common Adverse drug reaction
ENDOCRINE AND > Signs and symptoms of common endocrinopathies in the pediatric
METABOLISM age group, including red flag signs for endocrinopathies
> Laboratory work-up for the common endocrinopathies
> Diagnosis based on supporting evidence
> Principles of management of common endocrine disorders
> Endocrine emergencies and the principles of management
NEUROLOGY > Common neurologic problems in terms of etiology and given
diagnostic criteria
