Procedure
Note
♦ The engine is removed from the front without the gearbox after
removing the lock carrier.
♦ All cable ties which are released or cut open when removing
must be fitted in the same position when installing.
♦ Collect drained coolant in a clean container for re-use or dis‐
posal.
Caution
WARNING
– Release quick-release fasteners -1- and -2- and take off front
noise insulation.
– If fitted, open quick-release fasteners -3- and remove rear
noise insulation.
– Place drip tray for workshop hoist - VAS 6208- or drip tray -
V.A.G 1306- under engine.
Vehicles with coolant drain plug:
– Open coolant drain plug on coolant hose (bottom) at radiator.
– Unplug electrical connector at radiator outlet coolant temper‐
ature sender - G83- and move wiring clear.
Vehicles without coolant drain plug:

– Pull out retaining clip -1- for radiator outlet coolant temperature

– Pull radiator outlet coolant temperature sender - G83- out of
hose connection and drain off coolant.
– Move wiring clear.
All vehicles:
– Detach coolant hose (bottom) from radiator -arrow-.
– Detach bottom air intake hose -1- from charge air cooler.

pansion tank -arrow-.
– Unplug electrical connector for coolant shortage indicator
switch - F66- at bottom of coolant expansion tank.

To avoid any damage, the flexible joint in the front exhaust pipe
must not be bent more than 10°.

All vehicles:
– Mark position of nuts -1- and locating sleeves -2- on bottom of
engine mountings (left and right).
Note
Different mounting holes are provided for the different engine ver‐
sions.
Note
Audi Cabriolet:
If the bottom bolts on engine/gearbox assembly flange cannot be
removed:
– Raise engine/gearbox assembly at torque reaction support
using engine and gearbox jack - V.A.G 1383 A- .
– Make sure no wires/pipes are damaged at the top on the bulk‐
head.
WARNING
All vehicles:
– Slacken off top nut -arrow- on left-side engine mounting sev‐
eral turns.
– Unscrew top bolts on engine/gearbox assembly flange; leave
one bolt in place (finger-tight).

The support hooks and retaining pins on the lifting tackle must

Procedure
– Secure engine to engine and gearbox support - VAS 6095-
using -VW 540- prior to performing assembly work.

Note
– Clean input shaft splines and (in the case of used clutch plates)
the hub splines. Remove corrosion and apply only a very thin
coating of grease - G 000 100- to the splines. Do not lubricate
guide sleeve. Protected by copyright. Copying for private or commercial purposes, in part or in whole, is not
– Bond the plastic ring for release bearing to bearing race using
adhesive - AMV 195 KD1 01- .
• Three square lugs -arrows- on the plastic ring engage in the
recesses in the bearing race.
• The release bearing must be renewed if it has scoring deeper
than 0.5 mm.
– A needle bearing must be fitted in the crankshaft on vehicles
with manual gearbox. If necessary, install needle bearing
⇒ page 70 .
Vehicles with multitronic gearbox:
– Clean input shaft splines and splines of damper unit on fly‐
wheel; remove corrosion and apply only a very thin coating of
grease - G 000 100- to the splines. Remove any excess
grease.
Vehicles with automatic gearbox 01V:
– Engines for vehicles with automatic gearbox 01V must not be
fitted with a needle bearing in the crankshaft. If necessary, re‐
move needle bearing ⇒ page 70 .
– To secure torque converter on drive plate, use only bolts of the
correct type (same as original equipment) as specified in ⇒
Parts catalogue .

– Remove both front wheels.
– Vehicles with auxiliary heater: remove bolts -arrows- securing
exhaust pipe for auxiliary/additional heater to noise insulation.
– Release quick-release fasteners -1- and -2- and take off front
noise insulation.
– Remove front bumper cover ⇒ General body repairs, exterior;

– Move knurled screw back and forth slightly; the valve cotters
are thus forced apart and taken up by the cartridge.
– Release pressure fork.
– Take out assembly cartridge with spacer ring, guide bush,
valve spring plate and valve spring.

A plastic sleeve -A- is included with the new valve stem oil seals.
– Fit plastic sleeve -A- onto the valve stem to prevent damage
to the new valve stem oil seal -B-.
– Lightly lubricate sealing lip of valve stem oil seal.
– Slip valve stem oil seal over plastic sleeve.
– Carefully press valve stem oil seal onto valve guide using
valve stem seal fitting tool - 3365- .
– Remove plastic sleeve.
