Basic Microeconomics
A Reflection on A Documentary
China is considered the rival of the USA when it comes to the economy. The
main reason is its ever-growing economy. In recent years, China has been investing
considerable funds in ASEAN countries, especially Cambodia and Thailand. This
investment has positive and negative implications for both Cambodia and Thailand.

As the documentary unfolds, the vision of China became clear. It wants to

expand its economic power throughout ASEAN countries, Asia, and even the world. It is
expectable as China has the funds and a clear vision.

The Chinese can be called kind colonizers. They approach countries that need
investments and funds then make these countries a place for China to expand their
businesses. Not only to earn profits, but the Chinese also reduce the unemployment
rate and these countries’ economy. This situation is a win-win for both parties.

Not being able to solve the problem entirely, a new problem has emerged. This
time the problem lies with the local businesses. These businesses lost their customers
and visitors because the enterprises owned by the Chinese attract more tourists. In
addition to that, Chinese visitors only come to establishments run by the Chinese.

Cambodia and Thailand are concerned with their economy. They accepted the
investments from China and helped their economy grows. But at some point, the local
people need to have equal importance. Without the locals, Cambodia is not Cambodia,
and Thailand is not Thailand. The government should make fair policies so that the local
businesses can thrive. The Chinese have a huge advantage with its strong language
presence and its experience in doing business. The local businesses need support from
the government.

China has the upper hand in these relationships with Cambodia and Thailand. It
has not only fastened its economic growth but also earned these countries’ trust.
Discussing investments and other agreements will be easier in the future. If China
continues to do this to other countries, the USA will eventually lose its dominance.
