Semester Completion Plan for Spring Semester 2019-20
1. Grading System
A. Courses
(i) Letter grades with grade points would be awarded as per the weightages
jen in Section 2.
(ii) A student who obtains a pass letter grade (D and above) in a course will have
the option to either get it converted into a Satisfactory (5) grade (with no
grade point) which will be treated as final or appear in a re-examination later
(if the course has a lecture component). There will be no restriction on the
letter grade earned after re-examination.
‘A student who obtains a fail grade in a course will also be allowed to appear in
a re-examination. There will be no restriction on the letter grade earned after
re-examination.
(iv) There will be no limit on the number of courses in which a student can avail
re-examination
(v)_Astudent who takes a re-examination will be allowed to withdraw the course
up to one week after the results of the re-examinations are announced.
(vi) | The schedule for re-examinations will be announced later.
B. UG/MSc Projects
() Departments may individually decide whether the assessment available till
now will suffice to award letter grades without any further evaluation. If a
department decides that no further evaluation is necessary, it can proceed
with the award of letter grades and share it with the students. A student can
request the department for the conversion of the letter grade obtained to a
Satisfactory (S) grade, which will be treated as final, or request for one final
online evaluation in the current semester itself. The grade obtained after this
online evaluation will be treated as final.
(i) Rest of the departments can proceed with online evaluation and share with
the students the letter grades awarded. A student can request the
department for the conversion of the letter grade to a Satisfactory (S) grade
which will be treated as final.
In the case of a fail grade, re-evaluation will be done later.2;

Online thesis evaluation of the students who are ready for evaluation be
carried out and letter grades be awarded.
The thesis evaluation committee will also decide whether the thesis needs
the following to be mentioned at the beginning of the thesis:
“All the objectives of this thesis could not be met because of disruption in
academic activity caused by Covid-19 pandemic”
A student can request the Head of Department to convert the letter grade
obtained to a Satisfactory (S) grade.
In the case of a fail grade, re-evaluation would be done later.
A student who desires to carry out more work before his/her thesis will be
ready for evaluation should request for deferred evaluation, which will be
conducted within the first 6 weeks of the next semester.
D. MTech (1 year) and PhD course work seminar

Letter grades will be awarded on the basis of an online evaluation. In the
case of a fail grade, re-evaluation will be done later.
The students who are not prepared may request the supervisor for deferred
evaluation, which will be conducted within the first 4 weeks of the next
semester.

NPTEL courses
Satisfactory (5) / Unsatisfactory (U) grades will be awarded on the basis of the
marks obtained in assignments. However, a student who wishes to convert an
S/U grade to a letter grade may email his/her choice to arevaluation@iitr.ac.in in
the Academic affairs Office (AAO) by the date mentioned in the table below.
Such students will appear in an online examination and be graded as per the
usual process. A student can withdraw a course up to one week after the results
are announced.

Faculty members will announce the final weightages of their course(s) to the
students registered in their course(s). Online evaluation component can be
included in a course only if all the students registered in the course have internet
access. The AAO will provide the course instructors the CGPA of the students
registered in their course(s).
The course instructors will inform the grades obtained to the students registered
in their course(s).
Subsequently, the course instructors will convert the pass letter grade obtained
by a student into a Satisfactory (5) grade, if the concerned student requests for
the same.
The final grades and the list of students who have requested for deferred
evaluation will be submitted to the AAO.
Results of a program will be declared as soon as all the required information will
be available in the AAO.

5. Performance of the students in Spring Semester 2019-20 will not be counted for
academic performance-based termination of programs, slow pace programs and towards
any other such clauses.
6. All the relevant course evaluation provisions listed above would also be applicable for
preparatory courses.
7. All the provisions listed above are only one-time special provisions in view of COVID-19
pandemic and will override the existing relevant clauses.
