BEAD WELD
• Like sewing up a seam, there are several ways to run a
weld bead along a joint. Yet unlike tailors, welders
frequently need to perform their work in an awkward
position. Gravity also plays a role in how molten metal
gets deposited between metal plates or pipe sections. If
you're welding overhead, for instance, you've got to
move fast or the weld metal will end up on your face
shield, rather than in the joint. After preparing a joint for
welding, selecting the appropriate rod and choosing the
right machine settings, a welder must use a certain kind
of hand stroke and the right speed to get the bead
down properly.

GROOVE WELD
• According to the AWS (American Welding Society) a groove
weld is a weld on a work piece surface, between work piece
edges, between work piece surfaces, or between work piece
edges and surfaces. The actual weld groove is a channel in
the surface of the work piece or an opening between two joint
members providing space to contain weld metal.

FILLET WELD
• Fillet welding refers to the process of joining two pieces
of metal together when they are perpendicular or at an angle.
These welds are commonly referred to as tee joints, which are
two pieces of metal perpendicular to each other, or lap joints,
which are two pieces of metal that overlap and are welded at
the edges. The weld is triangular in shape and may have a
concave, flat or convex surface depending on the welder’s
technique.

PLUG WELD

• A plug weld is used to fasten two pieces of metal

together using a welding machine. When joining the
pieces, a hole is drilled into the top piece and it is
laid over the bottom one. A weld is then made by
running a bead inside of the drilled hole, thereby
holding the two pieces together. When doing auto
body repair, this type of weld is often used when
replacing body panels. The finished result resembles
a spot weld in that it is circular.
