Practical Assignment

This assignment is designed to enable you to develop your problem-solving skills

and build your knowledge of your power plant operation.

This is an individual assignment in which you will need to present your own report.
However, as we learn more from working together you are encouraged to work
together, share knowledge, build your understanding of your process and establish
your industry networks with your fellow participants.

Assignment:

Question 1:

You have been asked to explain the process of aligning a pump with a three-phase
electric motor.

Before starting the motor, the pump assembly is required to be accurately aligned.
Outline the reasons for requiring alignment and list the processes necessary for
aligning the pump to the motor, from checking for soft foot to using a series of
dial gauges and shims to align the assembly. Include images and a check sheet for
alignment checking. Do not use a laser tool to align.

Question 2:
The final phase for troubleshooting is Root Cause Analysis. Choose one of the
ways of analysing the root cause for troubleshooting and briefly explain the
process.
