Chapter 7: Develop A Bias For Action: Focus On Results
Over the years, I have done more than 5,000 interviews on radio and TV, in magazines, newsletters,
newspapers, blogs, and in front of audiences. Over and over, people ask me, “What is the secret of
success?” But, as Og Mandino once told me, “There are no secrets of success; there are merely
timeless truths that have been discovered over and over again.” That being said, I think that one of
the great secrets of success in business is simply “task completion.” In the final analysis, you will
be judged by your ability to get results that people want, need, value, and will pay you for. People
who are paid high salaries and get promoted to senior positions are people who have developed a
reputation for getting the job done- for getting results far in excess of those achieved by the average
employee.
Focus on Results
Peter Drucker said that the first question of an executive should be, “What results are expected of
me?” This should be your first question as well.
The key to task completion is simply to “get going and keep going.” David Allen’s popular time
management book is called Getting Things Done. That really summarizes the beginning and end of
accomplishment in the world of work.
In a study of 104 CEOs, respondents were asked what would be the most important qualities to
advance in their organizations. Most of them agreed on two qualities. The first was the ability to set
priorities: to determine what was more important and what was less important. The second quality
for advancement was the ability to get started and then to get the job done quickly and well.
Action Orientation
Successful people have a series of “orientations,” habitual ways of thinking that set them apart from
the average. One of these is “action orientation.” This is a bias for action that makes them think
continuously about specific actions that they can take to achieve their goals and get the job done
quickly.
They are constantly in motion. They walk quickly, move quickly, act quickly, think quickly, and
even speak quickly. They are impatient. They think continually about starting and completing tasks.
If task completion is the key to success, and getting started on your tasks is the key to completing
them, the next question is, “Which specific task should you work on?”
