Dear customer!

This CD titled “Ex i Devices” contains manuals and data sheets of our explosion protected
devices, which are essentially protected by the kind of protection „intrinsic safety“. The
protection marking of these devices contains the letter “i” for intrinsic safety.

However, some of the devices on this CD use intrinsic safety only hidden inside, so the letter
„i“ is missing in the marking of the kind of protection, e. g.: BS-300, the transceiver of the
cordless laser barcode scanner SK-300, and FR-40E, the transceiver of the cordless keyboard
FT-40. In both cases the main kind of protection is moulding, marked by the letter “m”. Intrinsic
safety doesn’t concern you as user then, too.

This is different for devices with the letter letter „i“ in the protection marking. When the letter „i“
is not put into brackets, then these devices need an intrinsic safe supply and intrinsic safe data
lines. This may be a Z barrier with electrical values, which fit to the values of the intrinsic safe
device, or our intrinsic safe interface TW-100D, which offers galvanic isolation of supply and
data lines additionally (PS/2, RS-232, RS-485 or USB 1.0).
Devices with the letter [„i“] in brackets offer an intrinsic source themselves, such as the interface TW-100D. For the
base station BS-300 and the Ex-p controller F-351 this concerns an intrinsic safe output socket.

The electrical values of our interface TW-100D match with the values of our intrinsic safe
devices. Other intrinsic safe sources must have output values Xo (o = output), which
harmonize with the input values Xi (i = input) of our Ex-i devices. Regarding voltage, current or
power the source must not be able to deliver more Xo than the Ex-i device can bear.
Regarding capacitance and inductance the values Xi of the Ex-i device must be lower than the
Xo, which the source allows. In detail:
Uo ≤ Ui
Io ≤ Ii
Intrinsic safe source Po ≤ Pi Intrinsic safe device
Co ≥ Ci
Lo ≥ Li
The manuals contain further advice. Some concrete examples for connecting intrinsic safe
devices with PCs via interface TW-100D can be found in chapter 10 of the TW-100D manual.
