T
he Greek language doesn’t have a word for “stranger.” In the more than 30 years that I’ve
been in the restaurant business in Birmingham, I’ve discovered that Greek hospitality
isn’t so far removed from the Southern variety. And so I welcome you to The Fish Market
restaurant.
Feel free to expect more for less.
We have more fresh fish — on our menu and in our market — than any other restaurant in
the area. Our expert catering staff does much more than just fish. Each day we welcome more
friends to our restaurant. And everyone — whether they eat here, take out or have us cater their
meal — will pay less than they expect for the freshest food available.
I’ve always wanted to give my customers a nice, comfortable and interesting place to visit, so we moved to this
historic warehouse in the spring of 2005. You can eat in the dining rooms, on the patio, at the oyster bar, or get your
food to go. You can even shop our collection of hand-selected antiques and decorative items from around the world.
Look to our market for the freshest seafood available. Choose fine, imported specialty foods and select wines
from our shelves. You’ll find lots of exciting choices including our own quality Tsitalia olive oils. Named after the vil-
lage in Greece where I grew up, these oils come from olives grown by families I’ve known for years.
In The Fish Market restaurant, the live lobsters have company. Our state-of-the-art tanks hold a variety of choice,
live seafood such as rainbow trout and tilapia. With 36 feet of fresh-fish display cases, we have the largest selection of
whole fish in all of Birmingham. In fact, we are among the top five restaurants in the country when it comes to our
variety of fish and shellfish. And we’ll offer all this fresh fish with the genuine knowledge and expertise that you have
come to expect from us.
We go to great lengths (and we’re on very good terms with overnight shippers) to bring you fine, fresh seafood
from around the world. Our suppliers are the “who’s who” in the seafood business: Inland Seafood, Greg Abrams
Seafood, Olympic Shellfish Products and Harbor Docks Seafood, to name a few.
With our great selection from trusted suppliers, the fresh fish specials board changes every day. Cobia, shark,
black bass, baby snapper, whole flounder or Mediterranean sea bass are just a few possibilities. If it’s available and
fresh, it’s on the board.
The Fish Market was the first seafood restaurant in Birmingham to cook using no trans fats. What’s more, we’ve
expanded our menu to include imaginative, healthy choices like scallops and shrimp with chickpeas and fresh spin-
ach; delicious oyster stew and spicy jambalaya; tasty kabobs of tuna, swordfish, mahi-mahi and shrimp; and specials
like citrus-grilled orange roughy.
Some things, though, will always remain the same.
The prices at The Fish Market still make eating here a delicious value. I can continue to say we offer “the only
inexpensive fresh seafood in Birmingham.”
The faces here are familiar, too. Some of the folks you see behind the counter and in the dining rooms have been
with me since I purchased this business from my uncle, the late Jimmy Hontzas, in July 1982.
Another thing that’s a constant: you, the customer. I have been in the restaurant business since I came here from
Greece in 1969. I’ve watched my customers’ children grow up and become customers themselves with the next
generation in hand. All of you help make The Fish Market special.
It is my sincere wish that you’ll enjoy each and every visit to The Fish Market. I grew up hearing “kali orexi.” So I
also say to you, “Welcome. Bring your healthy appetite.”
