Upon immigrants’ arrival, they must abide by new and wide variety set of
rules. If these rules are not abided by, then immigrants’ may be punished.
Along with these rules, the Chinese Exclusion Act restricted many Chinese
immigrants’ entry to the United States.
 What can immigrants expect their journey to be like?
Immigrants can expect their journey from China to the United States to be
long, rough and tedious. They can also expect to be traveling below the deck
of ships, where it is crowded, and risk of disease is extremely high.
 What can immigrants expect immediately upon arrival?
Upon arrival, immigrants will be inspected for disease, questioned about
their backgrounds, and questioned about political views.
 What types of jobs are available for people from that home country?
Chinese immigrants labored first in gold mines and later railroad workers.
They were given dangerous jobs and paid less. Some immigrants were able
to eventually open businesses.
 Where are immigrants from the home country likely to settle? Why?
Immigrants from the home country are most likely to settle in neighborhoods
with other immigrants from the same country. This is to uphold traditions
and traditional customs.
 What will life be like once the immigrants are settled in the United States?
It will be difficult to settle in a first. Immigrants will have to make large
adjustment to the American lifestyle. However, as time progresses, life gets
better.
