PART 1
In the 19th century, women could only work as cooks, cleaners, factory workers or teachers. But some women
fought to be different. One of these women was Elizabeth Jane Cochran.
In 1880, when Elizabeth was 19, she wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper. Her letter was excellent and the
editor asked her to work as a reporter for the newspaper. In the past, women reporters didn’t use their real
names, so Elizabeth became Nellie Bly.
Nellie Bly was famous for her trip around the world. At the time, everyone was reading Jules Verne’s book
Around the World in 80 Days. Nellie wanted to go around the world faster than in 80 days.
Nellie started her trip in Hoboken, New Jersey on 14th November, 1889. During her long journey, she travelled
over seas, swamps and deserts. While she was travelling, she wrote articles for the newspaper every day. These
articles were very popular. After 72 days, when Bly arrived home on 25th January, 1890, thousands of people

Underground transport is very useful because it is quick and it doesn’t cause traffic jams. That’s why city
officials in Rome have planned new tunnels for their underground trains. But building these tunnels has
become very difficult.
Ancient Rome was established thousands of years ago. The ground under modern Rome has got many
objects from its long history. First, the tunnel builders found parts of buildings from the 15th-16th centuries.
On the next level down, they found a medieval road. Below that, they discovered objects from the 8th
century. Every time something was found, archeologists examined it before work on the underground could
continue. Sometimes, the objects weren’t important in the end. But at one point, the tunnel builders
stopped working on an underground stop near the Pantheon because part of an important ancient Roman
building was discovered there. Changes were made to the plans of the underground. So, in the future,
visitors to the area will walk an extra 182 metres to get to the closest underground stop. However,
protecting Rome’s history is more important than this.
