SYNC IT UP

WITH
GOLDILOCKS

1: SET THE
METRONOME
Start in the 72-100 range, and change
bows exactly with the click. Keep enough
focus in the bow that you can hear your
own "click" with each bow change! Those
should match up precisely with the
metronome.

2: TOO EARLY
AND TOO LATE
First, Goldilocks tries "too early": let your
fingers change to the next note before
the bow changes. Once you've played the
passage that way, try "too late": change
notes after the bow changes. If a shift is
involved, it's the arrival of the shift that
matters. Remember, the bow always
changes with the click!

3: CUT IT CLOSER,
FASTER, RIGHT
Now cut it closer: if you're changing
fingers early, put the changes just before
the bow changes. How close can you get?
Same for late. Then up the tempo! How
fast can you "do the Goldilocks" with the
passage? Now, you should be able to play
it "just right"!

4: EVEN IT OUT
If you're still not synced exactly, then your
left hand may not be behaving. Get rid of
the bow changes by slurring with long
slurs, and check the even-ness of your left
hand rhythm. If it needs work, try my
note-grouping method (that's another
video)! Then put the bow changes back in.
