COURSE DESCRIPTION
DIPLOMA IN CIVIL ENGINEERING
This course introduces the students to the developments of civil engineering in terms of their
historical and future perspectives highlighting the achievements of civil engineers both local
and overseas. The focus is then shifted to the personal traits of the achievers and elevate the
students’ aptitudes, attitudes, critical, creative and innovative thinking. The final assessment
will be the successful completion of a group project dealing with innovative and functional
physical models.
This course covers three aspects of engineering drawing, technical drawing, structural
drawing and civil engineering drawing. Students are also taught how to read architectural
drawing. The use of CAD software for drafting is taught along side the manual drafting
approach.
ECG103 GEOLOGY
This course deals with the the basic aspects of physical geology, structural geology and
engineering geology for civil engineering works. Principles of engineering geology will be
emphasized in areas of applied geology.
This course deals with the principles of soil mechanics. It covers topics on physical
properties and classification of soil, vertical stresses, shear strength, flow of water through
soil and soil compaction.
This course covers four main engineering materials i.e. cementious, metallic, organic and
inorganic materials. They are studied with reference to their composition, properties,
modification of some of their properties with respect to environmental effects and their
behavior at service.
This course deals with the application of basic soil mechanics principles to civil engineering
works. It covers topics on lateral earth pressure, bearing capacity of soils, soil consolidation
and settlement, slope stability and sub surface soil exploration.
The structures and materials laboratory introduces the testing procedures for basic civil
engineering materials and mechanics of structures such as tensile and torsion tests.
Experiments on arch, suspended cables, deformation of pin jointed structures and influence
line for simply supported beams are carried out as well. The course also covers the
experimental testing of cement, aggregate and fresh and hardened concrete.
This course reinforces concepts introduces in basic fluid mechanis, hydraulics and
wastewater. Students are required to conduct experiment, analyze and interpret data and
prepare laboratory reports.
This course provides exposure to students on the basic knowledge and understanding of the
principles in electrical, mechanical and utilities.
Introduction to types, forms, internal forces and joint of statically determinate structure, three
hinged arches, portal frame and suspension cable and an introduction to column stability.
Introduction to influence lines concept for statically determinate beams.
This course introduces students to the concept of fluid mechanics, including various
properties of fluid such as density, viscosity and pressure. Methods to measure some of
these properties are discussed and the concepts of floatation and stability are also
introduced. The course will also cover fluids under static condition and concepts on
continuity, momentum principles common flow measuring devices.
This course provides a hands-on skill on conducting standard soil laboratory testing.
Introduction to simple field tests for civil engineering purposes.
This course builds on the fundamentals given in fluid mechanics and reinforces students’
understanding of the behaviour of fluids, through the study of the flow of water in typical civil
engineering applications. The course covers the study the steady incrompressible flow in
pipelines and pipe networks, uniform flow in open channels and fluids machinery.
ECG305 SURVEYING
This course deals with the work of surveying in civil engineering practices. Students will be
introduced to surveying equipment, surveying techniques and analysis.
This course deals with the work of surveying in civil engineering practices. Students will be
exposed to field work using appropriate survey equipments.
This course deals with the determination of rotation and deflection for statically determinate
structure by using unit load method and Castigliano’s second theorem method. Analysis of
statically indeterminate structures is by using slope deflection method and moment
distribution method.
The course deals with the methods of analysis and design of reinforced concrete structures
in accordance with the relevant standard.
This course deals with the historical development of highway in malaysia, traffic engineering
theory, road geometric and pavement design, traffic control devices, road construction and
maintenance.
This course aims to combine knowledge in calculation of quantites and principles of work
estimation in order to estimate the total cost of a project.
This course provides basic knowledge on the management of construction projects through
out the various stages of the project life. The students will also be introduced to the workings
of the construction industry. A brief introduction to basic management concepts will also be
provided.
This course covers three areas namely water supply and wastewater engineering system.
The study of water supply will focus on sources of water supply, water quality, water demand
and water treatment system. The study of wastewater engineering will cover the collection
system of wastewater, conventional wastewater treatment system, enviromental impact of
wastewater and its effect on public health.
This course includes the civil engineering design project is a guided design of steel and
timber in accordance with relevant standard.
This course has been prepared for student undertaking Diploma in Civil Engineering (EC110
& EC111) to provide a mechanism for student to practice and execute the combination of
knowledge that has been learn before such as engineering economy, construction business
and construction management, in the implementation of construction projects. This course
also provides basic knowledge on the management of construction projects throughout the
various stages of the project life.
This civil engineering design project is a guided design of a building, including the design of
the structure, foundation and production of design drawings, integrating the relevant
knowledge gained from previous courses.
