Procedure:

Anticipatory set and closure

A.S: ask them “What are some birds that swim in the water?”

1. Ask the students what they know about swans and let them answer for a bit before

continuing with the lesson.

2. If they haven't said these answers already, ask the following

○ What size are they? (they can get up to 26 lbs)

○ What kind of habitat would you find this animal in? (mostly wetlands)

○ Do they eat plants or meat? (they eat plants, bugs, and sometimes small fish)

3. Go over what everyone's answers were again and say “keep all of those things in mind

while listening to this piece of music.” “This piece is called The Carnival of the

Animals (Le carnaval des animaux) and it is composed by Camille Saint-Saens.”

4. Ask the students to pay attention to which instruments are playing during the clip.

5. Play the part of the song from 21:21 where the swan section starts and pause at_22:30__.

6. After the song ends ask what instruments they heard (cello and piano)

7. Tell them that the cello represents the swan moving nicely through the water and the

piano represents the swan’s feet paddling.

8. Have some students be the fast paddlers and have some students be the calm water and

play the piece again

9. If time, switch who is doing the fast paddling and who is doing the water.

Closure: Which instrument represented the water? Can anyone tell me a fact about swans that we learned

today?

Educational Objective: By the end of this lesson, students will have learned . . .

To listen and be able to identify the cello and piano and also learn some facts about swans.
