Metacognitive Reading Report

Instructions: Read Caoli Olivia. “A History of Science and Technology of the Philippines.“ in Analysis of

Conditions for National Scientific and Technological Self- Reliance Then, complete the metacognitive
reading report below:

1. Difficult Concepts

a. First concept that I found difficult was the fact that our technological advancement here in the
country are not as well-equipped as it is in other nations although we have the best scientists and
inventors here in our country.

b. Another concept is why the government don’t pay as much attention to our own discoveries and
technological innovations as other nations to their own?

c. Lastly, it is not clear how the Philippines would have ended up if we haven’t been colonized by other
nations.

2. Learning Insights

a. Before reading the article, I thought that the Philippines did not have their own systematic way of
doing things. However, after reading the article, I now think/learned that we already had our very own
civilization and not just any way of living but a very intricate lifestyle that is truly admirable to think
about since it was as ideal as it seem in recorded documents.

b. Before reading the article, I thought that we will only have a few insights regarding how we have
modernized from a simple living into a very systematic and technologically inclined nation. However,
after reading the article, I now think/learned that our country, the Philippines have a very detailed
history on how it became what it is today.

c. Before reading the article, I thought that the native people in our country lived a very simple life.
However, after reading the article, I now think/learned that part of it is true but our ancestors had their
own way of living and mostly for survival and they had very systematic way of doing things.

3. Discussion Questions

a. How will the Philippines thrive for modernization without colonization?

b. Why don’t the Philippine government give proper support for the foundation and advancement of
technological innovation in our country?

c. Is education the only way to achieve greatness in terms of leading a developing country?
