Cooperative Learning

Grade: 11th

Subject: Algebra

1. Standards: “The basic modeling cycle is summarized in the diagram. It involves (1)

identifying variables in the situation and selecting those that represent essential features,

(2) formulating a model by creating and selecting geometric, graphical, tabular, algebraic,

or statistical representations that describe relationships between the variables, (3)

analyzing and performing operations on these relationships to draw conclusions, (4)

interpreting the results of the mathematics in terms of the original situation, (5) validating

the conclusions by comparing them with the situation, and then either improving the

model or, if it 24 | Page is acceptable,(6) reporting on the conclusions and the reasoning

behind them.”

2. Observable Objective: Students will be able to create an effective model with essential

information needed to survive a real-world situation by using mathematical formulas,

percentages, and graphs.

3. Instruction Learning Process: Students will be creating a model cycle where they are

to:

a. Students will select a state from our nation.

b. Find the population of the state

c. Find how much food, water, essential items are needed to survive a world

pandemic shutdown of four weeks.

3

d. Students will use their own resources to find how much food, water, and essential

items are needed for a person and how much is needed for the whole population

of the state.

e. Students will have to show that they identified the problem which is already

given: World pandemic shutdown.

f. Students will have to show how they formulate the statistical items needed for a

person and for the whole population of the selected state.

g. No repeated state unless approved by instructor.

h. Students will have to create a table of distribution of the information gather

i. Students will have to create a graph of distribution of the information gather.

j. Student will have to demonstrate predictions if the population from its state will

be able to survive the shutdown of four weeks.

k. Students will also how to inform how the state will respond to the shutdown.

4. Reflection: This is a strong underrated assignment for 11th graders where they were show

how they evaluate the resources, mathematical skills such as graphing, analysis,

interpreting formulas and acknowledge how to get ready for a world pandemic. As we are

living under a world pandemic, students will be able to identify and develop the skills

needed to be able to survive is hard conditions. The assignment is straight forward, there

should not be any major complications. One weakness from this assignment is that

students will have to know how to cite their resources and evaluate the information they

are using. It is a weakness because if students do not use reliable resources, then their

assignment will be unreliable. Also, another weakness is that students will need at least
4

two weeks to find all the information needed to be able to complete the assignment and

their focus could be despair from the daily lesson plans.
