Subject; FFAR’s Call for Proposals on Improving Climate Resilience in Crops
Dear Colleagues:
We are pleased to inform you that the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research (FFAR)
is calling for research proposals that focus on providing transformative approaches and
solutions to increase a crop’s tolerance for higher temperatures.
FFAR is a non-profit organization that builds unique partnerships to support innovative and
actionable science addressing today's food and agriculture challenges. It also leverages public
and private resources to increase the scientific and technological research, innovation, and
partnerships critical to enhancing sustainable production of nutritious food for a growing global
population.
FFAR welcomes applications from higher education institutions, non-profit and for-profit
organizations, government-affiliated researchers, and domestic and intemational
organizations. The research should be applicable to maize, rice, sorghum, millet, wheat, sweet
Potato, cassava, banana, yam, common bean, cowpea, chickpea, or groundnut, Among the
priority areas are:
1. Approaches that quantify the specific features of climate-driven temperature change
that will most impact erop plants (e.g. development/improverent of biophysical crop
simulation’ predictive models);
Solutions that address higher temperatures in day and/or night periods;
Solutions that address increased temperature variability;
Solutions that could be applied in crop genetic improvement programs;
Solutions that address the challenges of phenotyping for variation in thermotolerance,
including the impact of acctimation;
Solutions that address temperature response in crop plants, including molecular,
enzymatic, physiological, and/or genetic approaches;
Solutions developed in model plant systems that can be applied to the identified crops;
and
8. Solutions that can be reasonably applied in agricultural systems in low income
countries.
N ® fawn
Proposals covering other crops may be considered if the proponent can adequately describe
how the research would be applicable to the preferred crops. Moreover, potential solutions
that are applicable only to agricultural systems in high-income countries or that involve
domestication of new crops will not be considered.
