November Reflection
Ashley M Knepler
Reflection
During our November seminar, we had the opportunity to go into breakout rooms and
view other classmates' ePortfolios and discuss the impacts of COVID-19 on telehealth. In the
first part of the class, we were broken into breakout rooms; this aspect of the seminar was
significant. Since our semester had to be completed online, it is great to have opportunities to
talk with other classmates and know them better. It was also great to have a chance to view
others' ePortfolios and learn how different students formatted them, and if they had any "tricks,"
they could share with us. We were all also able to briefly discuss other classes and offer
suggestions to one another about upcoming assignments. I hope that we can continue having
opportunities to talk with other students for the seminar to feel more comfortable with one
another.
The second half of the lecture focused on telehealth and telemedicine and the impact that
COVID-19 has had on the development of this field. I thought this subject for seminar was
appropriate because it has been discussed in all of my other classes. Although the pandemic has
been devastating to many, I think I am in a unique situation where I have the opportunity to be
attending school and learning about how the field of medicine is responding to COVID-19 and
how we can be better prepared in case another pandemic were to occur. During my public health
undergraduate courses, telehealth was discussed to combat public health issues regarding access
to care. Due to the nature of the pandemic and the limitations it has placed on people with
regards to access to care, the field of telehealth and telemedicine has been forced to advanced so
that it can combat these issues. I believe that the future of medicine will be heavily
interconnected with technology, and to be able to have the opportunity to learn about the pros
and cons of telehealth will only help me in my future career as a health informaticist.
