Communications 1010 was a breath of fresh air. It was not a typical mundane class that
revolved around a textbook or a set schedule that was repeated time and time again. In Dr.
Haslams class there was variety and variation in both the types of lectures and the format of
them. There were core elements that were always there such as group participation in class and
class there should be more than just lectures about how to communicate. It should be practiced
and done in person and this class brought that. In a typical class, there aren't often days that are
all about interpretation of a picture or a teacher that drops a sick rap on one of his students. That
was just one way that he was able to spice things up.
I felt like the Communication 1010 book that was required for the class did not teach the
class and that was a good thing. With some classes the teacher never strays from the material and
only teaches from it like a bible. It never felt like there was a set schedule based solely on how
the book had been structured. It was mainly used as a teaching aid. That let the class feel more
authentic.
Communication 1010 never really had any useless assignments. In some classes, busy
work or “filler” is put in because the teacher is required to assign some sort of homework. It
never felt like that for me because every assignment actually used and practiced the forms of
communication being taught such as my speech for the public speaking unit on health anxiety.
Overall the teacher was never harsh and if circumstances arose that caused setbacks in
assignments he was understanding. It was a fun and enjoyable class all around and I learned a
lot.
