Defining vibratory service in a piping system

Vibratory service is when the piping is exposed to dynamic force

mechanisms of a significant enough magnitude to drive excessive vibration

Dynamic force mechanisms that should be considered are:

• Machinery excitation • Acoustic-induced (AIV)
• Pressure pulsations • Dead-leg pulsation
• Flow-induced turbulence (FIT, FIV) • Two-phase flow
• Flashing/cavitation • Slugging
• Transients (water hammer)

How to declare vibratory service in your system
Energy Institute AVIFF provides a comprehensive
approach to identifying vibration risk in a pipe system
Veridian – Easy and free software available to make
determination
Vibratory service recommended specification:
• Piping with an LOF ≥ 0.5 should be declared as
vibratory service and pipe supports should be
capable for that

Pipe supports suitable for vibratory service
• Many common pipe supports are not suitable for piping in
vibratory service, as they are considered flexible supports

• Wood has offered a methodology to evaluate a pipe

support’s effectiveness in vibratory service
 see Shake, rattle, and grow – part III webinar

• Wood offers a line of pipe supports engineered to

withstand the rigors of vibration service as well as
accommodate for thermal growth
– DamperX
– ThermaGlide
