No F.4(P) 38 Senate/MNIT/Acad/2018/6997 Dated 29/01/2019 to revise PG curriculum and then update PG and PhD rules and regulations. The committee constituted of Prof R Nagar (Chairman), Prof A B Gupta, Prof Vineet Sahula (Convener), Prof M L Mittal (Co-convener), Prof M K Jat, Dr Deepak Verma, Dr Satish Pipralia, and Dr Kamlendra Awasthi. After detailed deliberations the committee recommends the following, 1. Presently, MNIT offers PG programs in Engineering and Technology (M. Tech), Architecture and Planning (M. Plan), Management (MBA), Science (M. Sc). It was stressed that as there are different requirements of the different programs the schemes for the four PG programs should be different. Thus, separate schemes for M. Tech,?. M.Plan, MBA, and M. Sc are proposed (attached). The salient features of the proposed scheme are: a. The minimum credit requirements, credits through course work and dissertation/research projects and breakup of credits between semesters is as per the specific requirements of the programs and to align the same with other reputed institutes/universities. b. In the current scheme all core courses are kept in first semester and all elective courses in second/third semester. This structure is restrictive in the sense that no elective courses can be offered in the first semester and no core courses can be offered in the second semester. This restriction is removed in the proposed scheme and first and second semester contains “Taught Courses” which include program core, program elective and ‘a aiohbifnals — ‘ open elective which can be decided by the departments as per the specific requirements of the programs. c. A core course can be of 3-4 credits. d. An elective course can be of 1-3 credits. However, maximum number of 1 credit courses in a PG program shall be 3. 2. In the current scheme the taught courses are of 3 credits with varying L-T-P structures. These courses are, however, to be entirely delivered by the course coordinators. In some courses, however, need is felt for inputs from experts from industry/faculty from other reputed institutes/available MOOC courses from reputed Indian and international institutes/universities. Looking at this aspect it is proposed that a taught course can be fractionalized for example in a 3-0-0 course, 2-0-0 to be taught by a course coordinator plus a short credit 1-0-0, to be taught by an Industry/academic expert/reputed MOOCS approved by DPGC of the department and information to Dean (Academics). The maximum credits earned through MOOCs can be 7 in a PG Program. 3. As per the current regulations the credits earned in the dissertation are not counted in final CGPA calculations (though shown in the grade sheet). Members felt that due to non-counting of dissertation grades in CGPA, seriousness of the students towards dissertation has gone down seriously affecting the output of the dissertation. It isthus proposed to count dissertation grades in final CGPA. However, AA grade shall be awarded to exceptionally bright students who have published/got acceptance in reputed SCI/ SCOPUS rated journals or submitted a patent or received an award or funding for research project. out of their dissertation work. 4. As per the current regulation a research scholar has to earn certain credits (9 credits for PhD with M. Tech/M. Plan/MBA with B. Tech, 24 es rh no Obiobpepraler ee ale ee ia ie a ae a a re A SB sc Re a aa credits with B. Tech/MCA, and 18 for PhD with Science/Humanities & Social Science (MA/M.Phil/M.com) to be eligible for comprehensive examination. Out of the course, work Research Methodology (RM) is a compulsory course with 3 credits. With respect to the course work * following is proposed: a. RM course, presently offered by Department of Mechanical Engineering (DME), has two parts A and B. Part A is common to all and part 8 is different for Engineering and Non-Engineering students. Part A focuses on fundamentals of research and research process. Part B for engineering students (taught oy DME) focuses on design of experiments and optimization while part B for non-engineering students (taught by Department of Management studies) focuses on survey-based research. As per current practice a student is not free to choose part B of the course which in some cases is not effective. It is thus proposed that a scholar may be allowed to choose any of the part B for engineering and non-Engineering as per the recommendations of DREC of the student. b. As per current regulation a PhD scholar in Science/Humanities & Social Science with M.Sc/MA/M-Phil/M.com has to earn 18 credits through course work (including 3 credits through RM). Members pointed out that 18 credits are too heavy and not 2 per UGC guidelines. It is thus proposed to reduce course work requirement to 15 (including 3 credits through RM) so that it is aligned with UGC requirement in the matter. c. The members pointed out that many a times courses being offered in the institute are not relevant for the proposed area of research of the scholar and thus becomes rere formality adding no value. It is thus proposed to allow courses in blended MOOC format. A reputed MOOC course shall be selected by DREC. The Scholar shall have to complete the course and obtain certification and grade/marks. The final evaluation shall be done by the supervisor on the basis ‘of end term examination giving at least 66 percent weight age to the marks/ grades obtained in the MOOC's course. At most one course can be done by the scholar in blended MOOCS. Pd, oe Prof R Nagar ProfABGupta Prof V Sahula prt Jat Prof ML Mittal Dr igh d Bipralia. Dr K Awasthi Proposed Program Structure for M.
