Becoming an Active Reader
Step 1 of 2 Active Reading
Being an active reader (/glossary#Active_Reader) simply means you read something with the
aim of understanding and evaluating it. This will allow you to work out whether or not the text is
suitable for you to use. Before you start reading it is important to be clear on why you are reading
this resource. When you start to read you should be asking yourself what type of information you
need or want from the resource. During your study of the law it is very important to be an
active reader (/glossary#Active_Reader) as this will help you retain information and help you
make notes.
Some of the information you read will be easy to understand but some pieces are likely to be
complicated and difficult at first. You must identify if the information is of value to you or not. With
time your ability to do this will improve. You can evaluate what you are reading based on a range
of criteria. e.g. Is the information clear? Is the information relevant to the topic discussed?

easy to perceive and understand
Precise

exact and accurate
Specific

Accurate

correct
Relevant

connected to the question at hand
Consistent
When conclusions / findings / claims are consistent they are:
in agreement
Logical
When assertions are logical they are:
rational with clear and sound reasoning
